Special Hanukkah Message -- Mensaje Especial de Janukah
This is a bilingual message -- Este es un mensaje bilingüe

Within a couple of days Hanukkah will be upon us. This shall be Tuesday, the 20th of this month. This is the Feast of Lights also known as the Feast of Dedication. Also, this is the Feast that reminds us of the supernatural victory of the Maccabees against superior powers and numbers.
But more so, this Feast exhorts us to lean not on our own understanding because God’s doing a new thing. We’re to keep the Hanukkah candles of our revelational light blazing every day—every hour of our lives from here on out. There’s not time to trust on old methods (spiritual and practical) that worked in the past because God’s taking control over those areas now. This is also a time to rededicate our lives to God in a totally new way.
Remember, the old ways are things of the past. It’s time to ascend into His Presence and dwell there because that’s the only way we’ll survive the onslaughts that lay right ahead.

Dentro de dos días Janukah. Esto será el martes, dia 20 de este mes. Esta es la Fiesta de Luces también conocida como la Fiesta de Dedicación. También, esta es la Fiesta que nos recuerda de la victoria supernatural de los Macabeos contra enemigos de superior poder y numero.
Pero mas importante que esto es que esta Fiesta nos exhorta a no depender de nuestro propio entendimiento porque Dios esta haciendo cosa nueva. Nuestra tarea es de preservar las velas reveladoras de Janukah alumbrando cada día—cada hora de nuestras vidas de hoy en delante. Ya no hay tiempo de confiar en métodos (espirituales y prácticas) que trabajaron en el pasado porque Dios esta haciendo algo totalmente nuevo.
Recuerde, las maneras antiguas son asunto del pasado. Es tiempo de ascender a la Presencia del Eterno y permanecer allí porque esa es la única manera que vamos a sobrevivir los asaltos que nos esperan por delante.

EXCITING PROPHETIC DAYS -- DIAS EXCITANTES Y PROFETICOS

ESTE ES UN MENSAJE BILINGÜE—LA VERSION EN ESPAÑOL SIGUE MAS ABAJO
We’re living in very exciting days with great prophetic expectancy! At last, Obadiah’s prophecies are being fulfilled after more than two millennia.
Everywhere I’ve traveled in this hemisphere and parts of Europe, the Latino Sephardic Anusim are awakening to their roots. This is after half a millennium of almost total amnesia regarding their roots. They’re finding their genealogies, oral histories and ancestral Jewish objects of significance. Also, they are confirming their ancestries through DNA tests. Many are even traveling to Israel and finding great favor with their long-lost Jewish family.
In the days that lie ahead—not far from our vision—we’ll begin to experience great shakings that’ll open up the way for our people to make Aliyah and become Israeli citizens. It won’t be easy but then again nothing of true value comes easily.
We’ll also begin to see Sephardic Anusim pioneers among our people developing plans so as to also fulfill Isaiah chapter 40 from the 3rd to the 5th verses. Basically, these verses prophesy about a voice crying out in the desert (Negev) that the time has come to prepare the way for our Messiah. Thus, this awakening isn’t merely about our ancient paths but also about the way our Messiah will pass through on His way to Zion.
Along with the Messiah will also come an army of liberators just as Obadiah prophesied in verse 21.
In conclusion, I wish to give you a synthesis of the members in ACA. It’s kind of difficult to calculate the demographics because every day we receive applications for membership. Notwithstanding, here’s my synthesis.
Just as I expected, the majority of our members are U.S. citizens. What I didn’t expect was the vast, regional representation. In other words, our members are found in the four corners of our country and in every major region of our nation. We already have representatives from eight countries not counting America.
What most surprised me was that the number-one nation that consulted my ACA bulletin isn’t my country (the USA) but Venezuela. The second one was America, the third was Spain, the fourth is Argentina and the fifth is Israel. My dream is to see every state in my nation and every country in our hemisphere represented in ACA. So let us keep marching forward…ask your family and friends to join us because the days are coming in which we’ll really need each other more than ever.

Estamos viviendo en días muy excitantes de gran expectativa profética. Las profecías de Abdías, al fin, se están cumpliendo después de más de dos milenios.
Por donde quiera que haya viajado en este hemisferio y partes de Europa, el Sefardim-Anusim Latino está despertando a sus raíces. Esto es después de medio milenio de una amnesia casi total tocante a sus raíces. Están encontrando genealogías, historias orales y objetos ancestrales de significado Judío. A la par, están confirmando sus raíces ancestrales a través de exámenes de ADN. Muchos aún están viajando a Israel y encontrando mucho favor con nuestra familia Judía Israelí.
En los días que están por delante—no muy allá de nuestra visión—comenzaremos a experimentar estrujamientos fuertes que abrirán el camino para que nuestro pueblo haga alía y se tornen en ciudadanos de Israel. No será fácil, pero nada de gran valor es fácil.
También empezaremos a ver los pioneros Sefardíes Anusim de nuestro pueblo desarrollando planes para también cumplir Isaías capítulo 40 del verso 3 al 5. Básicamente, estos versos nos profetizan de la voz clamando en el desierto (el Neguev) que ha llegado el tiempo para preparar el camino para nuestro Mesías. Así es que este despertamiento no es solamente tocante a nuestros antiguos senderos pero también del sendero sobre la cual nuestro Mesías pasara yendo hacia Sion.
Con el Mesías vendrá un ejército de libertadores tal como profetizo Abdías en el versículo 21.
En conclusión, quiero darles una síntesis de nuestros miembros en ACA. Es poco difícil calcular las demográficas porque cada día tenemos nuevas aplicaciones de membresía. No obstante aquí va mi síntesis.
Tal como esperaba, la mayoría de miembros son ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos. Lo que no esperaba es la representación tan vasta en la esfera geográfica. Es decir, nuestros miembros se encuentran las cuatro esquinas del país y en cada región mayor de la nación. A demás, ya tenemos representantes de ocho países no contando con América.
Lo que más me sorprendió es que el país número uno que consulta mi boletín ACA no es mi país sino Venezuela. El país segundo es América, el tercero es España, el cuarto es Argentina y el quinto es Israel. Así es que puede ver que vasta representación e interés estamos logrando desde nuestra incepción. Mi sueño es de ver representación de cada estado en mi país y cada nación en nuestro hemisferio. Sigamos adelante…dígale a sus familiares y amigos que se unan con nosotros porque vienen los tiempos cuando nos vamos a necesitar unos a los otros más que nunca.

ANUSIM COALITION EXPANDING --- ANUSIM COALICION CRECIENDO
The Perfect Blend: Unity in Diversity ---- La Mescla Perfecta: Unidad en Diversidad

The new-born Anusim coalition is growing like a tsunami. Already we have 17 U.S. States and 6 foreign nations represented in ACA (ANUSIM COALITION of the AMERICAS). The point is that we’ve already expanded across the ocean into Italy. We have pending applications from other Latin American countries as well as Spain and Israel.
In all my years I’ve never seen a group of people with such commitment, passion and energy standing as one man. I’m reminded of Nehemiah 8:1--“…all the people gathered together as one man…” This is every leader’s heart desire—accentuating unity without usurping the beauty of diversity!
Our VISION is to attain a sincere communion between the descendants of Secret Jews (Anusim) in the Americas.
Our MISSION is the preparation for the coming days. (We know the days which are upon us are perilous, particularly for all persons with Jewish roots and for Israel.)
Our GOALS are:
1. Information – sending and receiving information regarding the People of Anusim
2. Fraternization – sharing histories and personal experiences
3. Connection with Zion and the Negev – news, reports and events related to Israel
and the Negev
The singular question es this: What’s so important about this coalition?
Despite the fact that this is the only coalition in the world which represents our Anusim People in all our historic and religious diversities, the major importance is found in two small verses of the Holy Scriptures—with many general references to the role of our people. These two verses are found in the Book of the Prophet Obadiah verses 20b and 21. It is there that the prophet explains to us that the exiles of Jerusalem shall occupy and possess the Negev. But in verse 21 he tells us that this group of Sephardim shall be part of an army that shall be involved in the liberation of Zion and the coming of Messiah. The great Prophet Isaiah tells us of a voice crying out in the Desert (Negev) of the urgency to prepare the way for Messiah. What we do not yet know is who this army includes, what’s our specific role and from what place are we to operate. (I have a study on this same subject which is for some other day.)
Meanwhile, many have asked if they must be able to prove their Jewish ancestry and the answer is no. Others have asked if being a Gentile would prohibit them from participating. Again the answer is no.

Estos versículos están en el libro del Profeta Abdías versos 20b y 21. Allí nos explica el profeta que los descendientes de los exiliados de Jerusalén ocuparan y poseerán el Neguev. Pero el versículo 21 nos dice que este grupo de Sefarditas serán parte de un ejército que estará involucrado en la liberación de Sion y la venida del Mesías. El gran Profeta Isaías nos habla de la voz clamando (gimiendo) en el Desierto (Neguev) la urgencia de preparar el camino para el Mesías. Lo que no sabemos todavía es a quien incluye este ejército y que es el trabajo específico nuestro y desde que lugar debemos obrar. (Yo tengo un estudio sobre este mismo tema pero este asunto es para otro día.)
Mediante tiempo, muchos me han preguntado si tienen que probar sus raíces Judías para ser aceptados en esta coalición y mi respuesta es NO. Otros me han preguntado si siendo Gentil les prohíbe participar con nosotros y mi respuesta es NO.

Closing statement: A word on my personal feeling which I’ve never shared publicly
I’d like to close this platica (chat) with two things. First, I’d like to share something very personal which I rarely refer to; and secondly, I’d like to leave you with a couple of anecdotes that truly encourage my soul because of the people that spoke them.
Three nights ago, all of a sudden, something hit me. It’s so extensive and profound that I can only share the tip of the iceberg. It has to do with my deep and private emotions. I’ve been aware of this all my life but it became totally clear to me that the reason why I’ve felt alone (not lonely) and isolated and often alienated is because I have a Jewish soul because I am a Jew. All my life I’ve felt as though I don’t belong here or there; and I just do not fit in places where an ordinary man easily fits. In fact, just about a week or two ago, my fellow graduates of Sidney Lanier High School, class of ’61 celebrated their 50th anniversary reunion. Did I attend? No. But why? Because I didn’t feel I actually fit 50 years ago and fit much less half a century later. The reunion was well attended but how can I be there if I don’t fit nor feel a sense of belonging?
I’ve often wondered why Helen and I don’t seem to connect (or fit) in many places. But I will say that something more profound than words can express touches my soul when I’m in the presence of my Jewish family. I kind of feel like either I was orphaned from my ancient Jewish family and am barely waking up to the reality of where I do belong; or I’ve suffered some rare form of amnesia and am just coming out of it. But I have so, so very much to learn in order to catch up to where I wish I’d be today—before I get any older.
Be it as it may, on a happy and fulfilling note let me tell you a couple of stories which give me great hope.
During one of our many visits to Israel, while in the Negev, not far from the Gaza border, my son, Arek, shared his story of our people’s awakening with a young Israeli soldier who happened to be in uniform and well-armed. After hearing his story, almost with tears in his eyes he said, “Our rabbis have been telling us about your people and he’s saying their coming back home.”
The second story relates to an Israeli official who was the head of the Settlements Division for the Jewish Agency a few years ago and he’s now the chairman of the board of the Jewish National Fund in Jerusalem. He’s asked us to simply refer to him as Duvdev. During one of our various conferences at the Ben Gurion Heritage Institute at Sde Boker, Duvdev confessed something that almost knocked me off my chair. He said, “When I heard Dell and Helen’s story and all they’re doing for their people, I became a soldier of their cause.” Duvdev flew from Israel all the way to a major meeting we had with Anusim leaders in New Mexico and then flew to NYC to lobby on our behalf. After this, he flew back to San Antonio, Texas to meet with other Anusim leaders in our own home. We visit with him every time we’re in Israel and we’ll see him again while there next month.
The third story pertains to Rabbi Joshua Stampfer, rabbi in Portland, Oregon who was a guest speaker at another one of our conferences in the Negev. This senior rabbi in his 80’s declared to our audience that his life had begun anew during a trip he took to Belmonte, Portugal and how he found a number of secret Jews in that city, namely Anusim. With eyes wide open, he later discovered that there are many crypto Jews in New Mexico and all across America’s Southwest.
In one of my many sessions with a God-sent angel to me, Rabbi Scheinberg, in a warm tone of voice he asked me: “So Dell, do you think you’re a Jew?” My response was, “No sir—I KNOW I am a Jew.” In fact, all things considered, I’m a heck of a good Jew.
CAUTION: Handle with care!
My word to you is, don’t give up on us and my people. Be patient with us because most of the time we don’t know what we’re doing when it comes to our Jewish faith and customs. We’re a different breed people. And don’t forget: startling a person in a deep can tend to reveal some pretty interesting behaviors with a swing or two—and a few choice words.

Closing statement: A word on my personal feeling which I’ve never shared publicly
I’d like to close this platica (chat) with two things. First, I’d like to share something very personal which I rarely refer to; and secondly, I’d like to leave you with a couple of anecdotes that truly encourage my soul because of the people that spoke them.
Three nights ago, all of a sudden, something hit me. It’s so extensive and profound that I can only share the tip of the iceberg. It has to do with my deep and private emotions. I’ve been aware of this all my life but it became totally clear to me that the reason why I’ve felt alone (not lonely) and isolated and often alienated is because I have a Jewish soul because I am a Jew. All my life I’ve felt as though I don’t belong here or there; and I just do not fit in places where an ordinary man easily fits. IT'S TIME TO UNITE! / ¡Es Tiempo de Unirnos!

This is a brief intermission to My Life blog series.
IT’S TIME TO UNITE!
It’s a well-known fact that the descendants of secret Jews (ANUSIM) are awakening all across the Americas. The issue is that our numbers are into the millions and our distances range as far north as Canada and as far south as Chile and Argentina, and all the way to the islands of the Caribbean.
What compounds this matter is that there are tens of thousands of square miles separating us from one another.
The problem is this: we have neither a formal organ nor a coalition by which to communicate or unite us. Our people have a very distinct history, a special and peculiar culture and particularly a prophetic purpose which calls for us to unite.
Allow me to state the basic reasons why we need unite with five bullet statements which respond to the letter “w,” and one that relates to the letter “h.”
Who? Who may belong to this coalition? YOU! If you know or suspect that you’re a descendant of secret Jews (Anusim) or if you have a calling or passion to collaborate with us, then this is for you!
What? Anusim Coalition of the Americas (ACA) – This is our proposed name for our international coalition which already has serious sympathizers in the Americas as well as Iberia and Israel.
When? Now! Now’s the time to unite—not after Israel finally opens her doors to our people or those that hate us begin their reign of hate crimes.
Where? This coalition will be a centralized-decentralized organization with its headquarters in my native city of San Antonio, Texas; and satellite hubs all over our Americas.
Why? Because the Holy Scriptures prescribes an incredible mandate upon our specific people with a peculiar role to play that speaks to the coming of Messiah.
How? With God’s Divine help, with the help of the internet and the mystery of our inward calling and passion, nothing can stop us!
I’ve been on this super-challenging journey for just 15 years. All signs point to the almost desperate need for us to unite now without delay! End-times prophecies are already seen all over the place. We have no time to wait or procrastinate.
We need each other desperately, more than we think or believe! So write me today and ask me for our vision statement, our mission, goals and objectives. They’re not set in concrete so I charge you in love to communicate at your earliest convenience.
I want to emphasize one thing: this Project is not a scheme to neither fund raise nor ask for donations for me or any other organization. This is strictly a sincere work of obedience to our Creator.

Intermisión Breve
Esta es una breve intermisión a la serie de blogs titulados Mi Vida.
¡ES TIEMPO DE UNIRNOS!
Es una verdad bien conocida que los descendientes de los Judios secretos (ANUSIM) están despertando alrededor de todas las Américas. La cuestión es que nuestros números cuentan en los millones, y las distancias que nos separan son desde el norte en Canadá hasta el sur a Chile y Argentina hasta las islas del Caribe.
Lo que aumenta esta situación es que decenares de millas cuadradas nos separan unos de los otros.
El problema es este: no tenemos ni un órgano formal ni una coalición por la cual comunicar ni unirnos. Nuestra gente tiene una historia muy distinta, una cultura muy peculiar y especial, y particularmente un propósito profético que nos llama a unirnos.
Déjeme darle las razones básicas porque debemos unirnos con cinco declaraciones en forma de preguntas.
¿Quién? ¿Quién puede pertenecer a esta coalición? USTED. Si usted sabe o sospecha que usted es un descendiente de los Judíos secretos (Anusim) o si tiene usted una pasión por colaborar con nosotros, entonces esto es para usted.

¿Por qué? Porque las Sagradas Escrituras prescriben un mandato increíble sobre nuestra gente particular con un trabajo que hacer que implica la venida de nuestro Mesías.
¿Cómo? Con la ayuda Soberana de Dios, con la ayuda del internet y el misterio de nuestro llamado interno y pasión, nada nos detendrá.
Yo he estado en esta jornada con retos mayores por solamente 15 años. Todas las señales apuntan a nuestra necesidad desesperada para unirnos sin dilación. Las profecías de los días finales ya se ven y están en su lugar. No tenemos más tiempo para perder, ni esperar o procrastinar.
Nos necesitamos desesperadamente, más que lo que pensamos o creemos. Así es que escríbame hoy y pídame por nuestra declaración de visión, nuestra misión, nuestra meta y objetivos. No están en cemento así es que le encargo en amor que comunique conmigo tan pronto como le sea posible.
Una cosa quiero enfatizar: este proyecto no es un esquema para recaudar fondos o pedir donativos para mí o ninguna organización. Este esfuerzo es uno sincero y de obediencia a nuestro Creador.

My Life -- Mi Vida Part 4

In this episode I want to talk a bit about the topics on: death and dying, certain sayings and cliches and of first names among many Hispanic/Latinos with Sephardic Anusim roots.
---En este episodio, quiero hablar un poco sobre los tópicos de: la muerte y agonía, dichos y refranes, y primeros nombres entre muchos Hispano-Latinos con raices Sefardies-Anusim.
Death, and Dying
I have this vague recollection which I’ll share reservedly. I don’t remember if it was when Mama Cuca or Papa Abraham (my maternal great grandparents) died that mother covered the mirrors in our house. Years later, when Papa Lupe passed away I noted how my aunts acted so “Sephardic” in their animated manner. (Of course, this is my personal perception.) This is my stereotype based on certain Biblical examples (such as Samuel weeping for Saul and David weeping over Absalom and Naomi’s perpetual grief after the death of her husband and two sons).
When Papa Lupe passed away, my whole world got suspended. He was my hero. He was an amazing man beloved of multitudes of people. After his death his favorite chair at the tiny dinner table was left empty for some extended time and a meal was offered to some homeless person or beggar. I can still hear deep in the chambers of my heart my precious aunts consulting with one another who they’d give this meal to. I always thought to myself, “Why not give it to Tonto Pete” who was the friendly barrio beggar. Maybe he was a wino because his big nose was always rosy red as he sported his big smile under his ungroom mustache.
We had strange and scary stories one of which was La Llorona. Now I wonder if this myth wasn’t intended to keep alive the old Scripture about Rachael weeping for her children because she never stopped weeping, (Jeremiah 31:15).
Dichos y refranes – sayings and clichés
My father’s side of the family was different to Mother’s side. As I look back to those early days, I always had the stereotype of all Jews being White Europeans. They fit the Ashkenazi model much more than the Sephardic model with the exception of their Spanish language and their oral histories that were linked to Spain. Dad’s family seemed to have a different world view of things. They were much less touch oriented, a bit on the bland side of emotion, more “philosophical,” and carried a peculiar air of “nobility,” (or austerity).
As I stated earlier, I learned more Sephardic dichos y refranes from Dad’s family than from Mom’s. For instance, I clearly remember that on one or more occasions, I’d hear (mostly) Uncle Josue say to his brothers in a semi-kidding way: Somos Levitas de la Tribu de Levi. It was an inside joke that I never could understand until we got Dad’s DNA test results; but more particularly after we conducted an advanced “Family Finder” factor to this test. I don’t yet have conclusive information but it well could be that there are some eastern European Jewish Levite bloodlines flowing through our family on dad’s side. But then again, there are traces of this in Helen’s maternal grandfather’s line.
It’s simply amazing how Sephardic and Ashkenazi couples would intermarry. What’s even more amazing is how the Sephardic language, culture and customs were so prevalent even among our people who had stronger Ashkenazi bloodlines. In other words, there are cases in which families have more Ashkenazi DNA roots but their culture, language and customs are much more Sephardic. So while they have Ashkenazi blood they have a Sephardic socio-cultural worldview.
I was never a fast runner as a kid but when dad noticed a child that was fast on his feet, he’d say, Que ladino es, so I used to think that ‘ladino’ meant speedy. I suppose this term got adapted from the true meaning of Ladino (which is the language and culture of Sephardim). After all, our Sephardic ancestors forever had to flee as fast as they could for their own lives.
Growing up in the barrio we created our own vocabulary and glossary of terms. We’d apply words and terms within our sentences so that outsiders wouldn’t understand what we were talking about. One of hundreds of such terms was, No te relajes. The term “relajar” means to relax. Yet we meant this term to mean, No te hagas para atras or “don’t chicken out,” which is partly true within our barriology. But I discovered during my investigative odyssey that “relajar” or “relajamiento” refers to a Sephardic victim that had been processed by the Inquisition and burned alive at the stake. So when you say, No te hagas para atras, it makes a world of sense. It meant that in light of possible torture and execution by burning, “Don’t chicken out—don’t deny your faith.”
A term that would hit deep within me but I never understood its actual meaning till I began this quest 15 years ago was when Dad would say, Ay, que garriotiada lleve hoy. I used to think they were saying barriotiada with a “b” not garriotada with a “g,” there’s a world of difference in these two terms. Barrote is a heavy beam. So I would imagine that Dad was figuratively speaking of what a beating or a ‘beaming” he’d taken during the day with so much work. What it actually meant was “what a garroting” he’d taken in terms of persecution and possible anti-Semitism without him knowing he was Semitic.
Biblical Names --(of the Tanakh or the Old Testament)
I want to shift gears from practices and sayings to a brisk statement on first names. I do want to declare that, after 15 years on this trail, we’ve discovered around 17,000 Sephardic surnames that sound very much like our Hispanic or Latino surnames. I’ll not address this world of onomastics at this time. I do, however, cover this subject in chapter five of my recent book, “Out from Hiding—Evidences of Sephardic (Anusim) roots among Latinos.”
I’ll be real brief on this but, as stated, there’s an entire body of knowledge on this subject. Dr. Stan Hordes has done some interesting research on how Anusim Crypto Jews placed a biblical first name on their children. I don’t intend neither do I have time to go there but I’d like to simply state that many of our Anusim forefathers named their children after a biblical name.
For instance, my father’s brothers are named: Daniel, David and Josue. My mother’s brothers were named: Eliazar and Daniel. Helen’s maternal uncle was named: Ezekiel.
I found that many of our female relatives were named with a phonetic sound of God such which ended with the phonetic, “ah” for YAH such as: Cordelia, Arnella, Eliza, Minerva, Olga, Blanca, Linda. Note how the phonetic syllable “el” for ELOHIM is also resident in many of these names such as Elida, Elizabet, Eliza, Delia and many others.
Our elder daughter named her daughter Lavonna which means moon in Hebrew without her even knowing it was Hebrew. On the other hand, our younger daughter Arnella named her daughter Aliyah which we all understand to means to ‘ascend and to return to Israel’ as in to immigrate to Erez Israel. Three of my grandsons have very biblical first names. One of them is Isaiah Judah whom I call Judah and the other is Elijah whom I call Eliyahu. The other one is Nathaneel. By the way, my Hebrew name is Phinehas because of its proximity to Delfino. (I’m referring to the grandson of Aaron, son of Eliezer not the son of Eli.)

Muerte y Agonía
Tengo esta vaga recolección que compartiré reservadamente. No recuerdo si fue cuando Mama Cuca o Papa Abraham (mis bisabuelos maternos) murieron que mi madre cubrió los espejos en nuestra casa. Años después, cuando Papa Lupe murió (mi abuelo materno), note como mis tías actuaban en una manera muy Sefardí en sus gestos y maneras muy animados, a mi parecer. (Por su puesto, esto es solo mi percepción.) Este estereotipo está basado en ejemplos Bíblicos (tal como el caso de Samuel gimiendo por el Rey Saúl y como David gimió por Absalón y como Noemí se angustiaba después de la muerte de su esposo y sus dos hijos.)
Cuando murió Papa Lupe, mi mundo entero fue suspendido. Él era mi héroe. Papa Lupe era un hombre admirable y amado por multitudes de gente. Después de su muerte, su silla favorita en la mesa pequeñita fue dejada vacía por un periodo de tiempo (que para mí se mi hiso largo) y una o varias comidas fueron ofrecidas a alguna persona destituida o un mendigo. Todavía puedo oír muy dentro de los salones de mi corazón mis preciosas tías consultando una con la otra a quien le darían la comida que le pertenecía a él. Siempre pensaba dentro de mi “Porque no dárselo a Tonto Pete” que era el mendigo del barrio. Este hombre parece que a menudo andaba embriagado porque tenía una nariz grande y muy roja, pero soportaba una gran sonrisa bajo su bigote que corría por todo rumbo.
Teníamos historias raras que provocaban temor tal como La Llorona. Ahora pienso que este mito posiblemente tenía el propósito de guardar antiguas Escrituras vivas tal como la de Raquel (en la Biblia) perpetuamente llorando por sus hijos según lo declara el Profeta Jeremías 31:15.
Dichos y Refranes
La familia de mi Papa era diferente al de mi Mama. En tanto veo para atrás a esos días tempranos, siempre tenía el estereotipo que todos los Judios parecían Europeos Blancos. Para mí, parecían más el modelo de los Judios Ashkenazitas más que el modelo de los Sefarditas. Por su puesto, la distinción era el idioma Español y sus historias orales que estaban arraigadas a España. La familia de mi Papa tenía una perspectiva mundial diferente a muchos otros, incluyendo a mi lado materno. Eran menos dados a tocarse unos a los otros aparte del saludo. Sus emociones eran menos expresivos y más filosóficos y cargaban un aire de nobleza social.
Tal como he dicho, aprendí más de los dichos y refranes Sefardíes del lado de mi Papa más que del lado de mi Mama. Por ejemplo, claramente recuerdo en una o más ocasiones oí a mi Tío Josue decirle a sus hermanos entre risas: Somos Levitas--de la Tribu de Levi. Era un dicho dentro de la familia que nunca comprendí hasta que mi Papa tomo un examen de ADN y sus resultados implican a algunos ancestros lejanos que se supone eran Levitas. Esto fue acentuado cuando los resultados de su ADN fueron avanzados por un proyecto científico llamado family finder, o buscando familiares. Todavía no tengo evidencias conclusivas pero puede ser que existen algunos Judios con sangre Levi fluyendo a través de la familia de mi Papa. No obstante, aun vemos rasgos de esto en el abuelo materno de mi esposa, Helen.
Es impresionante ver como hay entrelazamientos en la sangre Askenazi y la sangre Sefardí y como se entre-casaban. Lo que es aún más impresionante es como el idioma Sefardí, su cultura y costumbres prevalecían tanto aun entre nuestra gente que tiene más sangre Askenazi que lo que pensaban. En otras palabras, existen casos en la cual algunas familias tienen más raíces de ADN Askenazi pero su cultura, idioma y costumbres son mucho más Sefardíes. Así es que mientras tienen sangre Askenazi tienen costumbres socio-culturales Sefardíes.
De chico, nunca fui uno que corre rápido, pero cuando mi Papa notaba a un niño o joven muy veloz, él decía: Que ladino es. Me supongo que este término fue adaptado del significado actual que es Ladino (cuál es el idioma y cultura del Sefardim). Al fin y al cabo nuestros ancestros para siempre estaban huyendo velozmente por sus propias vidas.
Creciendo en el barrio, creamos nuestro propio vocabulario y términos especiales. Aplicábamos palabras y términos a nuestras oraciones para que los de afuera no comprendieran lo que decíamos. Uno de cienes de estos términos era: No te relajes. El termino relajar significa exactamente eso, relajar, estar augusto. Pero nosotros de dimos otro significado a esta frase. El significado más bien era: No te hagas para atrás, o no te acobardes. Pero, durante mis investigaciones, unos años pasados descubrí que la palabra relajar o relajamiento se refería a una víctima Sefardí-Anusim que había sido procesado por la Inquisición y quemado en vivo en las hogueras simplemente porque eran Judios. Así es que cuando decíamos, No te hagas para atrás, tiene un sentido totalmente distinto porque virtualmente decía que no se hiciera uno para atrás con relación a su fe. Es decir, a la luz de tortura y ejecución por quemazón, no se hiciera uno para atrás en sus creencias.
Un término que me tocaba muy profundamente pero nunca comprendía su significado actual hasta que empecé esta investigación 15 años pasados era cuando mi Papa decía, Ay que garriotiada lleve hoy. Yo pensaba que él decía que barriotiada con letra b no garriotada con letra g. hay una diferencia grandísima entre estos dos términos. Barrote es un pedazo de madera grande y pesada. Ahora quiero cambiar el tema de prácticas y dichos a una declaración breve tocante a primeros nombres. Quiero declarar que después de 15 años en esta senda, hemos descubierto alrededor de 17,000 apellidos o sobrenombres Sefardíes que suenan mucho como nombres Hispanos o Latinos. No voy a elaborar en este terreno de onomásticas a este tiempo. Solamente quiero cubrir este tema que se encuentra en el capítulo cinco de mi reciente libro, Out from Hiding—Evidences of Sephardic (Anusim) roots among Latinos. (En unos meses será publicada en Español.)
Aunque seré breve quiero decir que existe un cuerpo de conocimiento completo sobre este tema. El Dr. Stan Hordes ha hecho investigaciones muy interesantes sobre el tema de nombres bíblicos dados a los niños de familias Cripto-Judías conocidos también como Anusim. Mi intento no es de aludir a este tema a fondo y ni tengo el tiempo para hacerlo a esta vez. Quizá en otra ocasión. Solamente quiero decir que muchos de nuestros ancestros Anusim les dieron nombres Bíblicos a sus hijos.
Por ejemplo, algunos de los hermanos de mi Papa son: Daniel, David y Josue. Dos de los hermanos de mi Mama son: Eliazar y Daniel. Uno de los tíos del lado materno de Helen es Ezequiel.
He encontrado que muchas de las mujeres en nuestras familias fueron nombradas con fonéticas que incluyen el nombre de Dios al fin del nombre. Estos nombres llevan el sonido de ah para YAH o JAH. Algunos ejemplos son: Cordelia, Arnella, Eliza, Minerva, Olga, Blanca y Linda. Ahora note la silaba fonética para ELOHIM (un nombre sublime de Dios). Fijémonos como reside la fonética de la silaba de el en muchos de estos nombres como otras tías mías: Elida, Elizabet, Eliza, Delia y muchos más.
Nuestra hija mayor nombro a su hija Lavonna que significa luna en Hebreo, pero no lo sabía a la vez. Por el otro lado, nuestra hija menor, Arnella, le llamo a su hijita Aliyah. Este es una palabra muy especial Hebrea que significa retornar y ascender a Sion- Israel, es decir inmigrar a la Tierra de Erez Israel. Tres de mis nietos tienen nombres Bíblicos también. Uno de ellos se llama Isaías Judá a quien yo le llamo Judá. El otro se llama Elías o en Hebreo, Eliyahu. El otro se llama Nataniel. Entre paréntesis, mi nombre Hebreo es Fineas también pronunciado en Hebreo como Pinchas. Esto es porque mi propio nombre dado es Delfino y el nombre de Fineas (en inglés, Phinehas) se aproxima a Delfino. Me estoy refiriendo al nieto de Aarón, hijo de Eliazar, no el hijo de Eli.

In this episode I want to talk a bit about the topics on: death and dying, certain sayings and cliches and of first names among many Hispanic/Latinos with Sephardic Anusim roots.

Death, and Dying
I have this vague recollection which I’ll share reservedly. I don’t remember if it was when Mama Cuca or Papa Abraham (my maternal great grandparents) died that mother covered the mirrors in our house. Years later, when Papa Lupe passed away I noted how my aunts acted so “Sephardic” in their animated manner. (Of course, this is my personal perception.) This is my stereotype based on certain Biblical examples (such as Samuel weeping for Saul and David weeping over Absalom and Naomi’s perpetual grief after the death of her husband and two sons).
When Papa Lupe passed away, my whole world got suspended. He was my hero. He was an amazing man beloved of multitudes of people. After his death his favorite chair at the tiny dinner table was left empty for some extended time and a meal was offered to some homeless person or beggar. I can still hear deep in the chambers of my heart my precious aunts consulting with one another who they’d give this meal to. I always thought to myself, “Why not give it to Tonto Pete” who was the friendly barrio beggar. Maybe he was a wino because his big nose was always rosy red as he sported his big smile under his ungroom mustache.
We had strange and scary stories one of which was La Llorona. Now I wonder if this myth wasn’t intended to keep alive the old Scripture about Rachael weeping for her children because she never stopped weeping, (Jeremiah 31:15).
Dichos y refranes – sayings and clichés
My father’s side of the family was different to Mother’s side. As I look back to those early days, I always had the stereotype of all Jews being White Europeans. They fit the Ashkenazi model much more than the Sephardic model with the exception of their Spanish language and their oral histories that were linked to Spain. Dad’s family seemed to have a different world view of things. They were much less touch oriented, a bit on the bland side of emotion, more “philosophical,” and carried a peculiar air of “nobility,” (or austerity).
As I stated earlier, I learned more Sephardic dichos y refranes from Dad’s family than from Mom’s. For instance, I clearly remember that on one or more occasions, I’d hear (mostly) Uncle Josue say to his brothers in a semi-kidding way: Somos Levitas de la Tribu de Levi. It was an inside joke that I never could understand until we got Dad’s DNA test results; but more particularly after we conducted an advanced “Family Finder” factor to this test. I don’t yet have conclusive information but it well could be that there are some eastern European Jewish Levite bloodlines flowing through our family on dad’s side. But then again, there are traces of this in Helen’s maternal grandfather’s line.
It’s simply amazing how Sephardic and Ashkenazi couples would intermarry. What’s even more amazing is how the Sephardic language, culture and customs were so prevalent even among our people who had stronger Ashkenazi bloodlines. In other words, there are cases in which families have more Ashkenazi DNA roots but their culture, language and customs are much more Sephardic. So while they have Ashkenazi blood they have a Sephardic socio-cultural worldview.
I was never a fast runner as a kid but when dad noticed a child that was fast on his feet, he’d say, Que ladino es, so I used to think that ‘ladino’ meant speedy. I suppose this term got adapted from the true meaning of Ladino (which is the language and culture of Sephardim). After all, our Sephardic ancestors forever had to flee as fast as they could for their own lives.
Growing up in the barrio we created our own vocabulary and glossary of terms. We’d apply words and terms within our sentences so that outsiders wouldn’t understand what we were talking about. One of hundreds of such terms was, No te relajes. The term “relajar” means to relax. Yet we meant this term to mean, No te hagas para atras or “don’t chicken out,” which is partly true within our barriology. But I discovered during my investigative odyssey that “relajar” or “relajamiento” refers to a Sephardic victim that had been processed by the Inquisition and burned alive at the stake. So when you say, No te hagas para atras, it makes a world of sense. It meant that in light of possible torture and execution by burning, “Don’t chicken out—don’t deny your faith.”
A term that would hit deep within me but I never understood its actual meaning till I began this quest 15 years ago was when Dad would say, Ay, que garriotiada lleve hoy. I used to think they were saying barriotiada with a “b” not garriotada with a “g,” there’s a world of difference in these two terms. Barrote is a heavy beam. So I would imagine that Dad was figuratively speaking of what a beating or a ‘beaming” he’d taken during the day with so much work. What it actually meant was “what a garroting” he’d taken in terms of persecution and possible anti-Semitism without him knowing he was Semitic.
Biblical Names --(of the Tanakh or the Old Testament)
I want to shift gears from practices and sayings to a brisk statement on first names. I do want to declare that, after 15 years on this trail, we’ve discovered around 17,000 Sephardic surnames that sound very much like our Hispanic or Latino surnames. I’ll not address this world of onomastics at this time. I do, however, cover this subject in chapter five of my recent book, “Out from Hiding—Evidences of Sephardic (Anusim) roots among Latinos.”
I’ll be real brief on this but, as stated, there’s an entire body of knowledge on this subject. Dr. Stan Hordes has done some interesting research on how Anusim Crypto Jews placed a biblical first name on their children. I don’t intend neither do I have time to go there but I’d like to simply state that many of our Anusim forefathers named their children after a biblical name.
For instance, my father’s brothers are named: Daniel, David and Josue. My mother’s brothers were named: Eliazar and Daniel. Helen’s maternal uncle was named: Ezekiel.
I found that many of our female relatives were named with a phonetic sound of God such which ended with the phonetic, “ah” for YAH such as: Cordelia, Arnella, Eliza, Minerva, Olga, Blanca, Linda. Note how the phonetic syllable “el” for ELOHIM is also resident in many of these names such as Elida, Elizabet, Eliza, Delia and many others.
Our elder daughter named her daughter Lavonna which means moon in Hebrew without her even knowing it was Hebrew. On the other hand, our younger daughter Arnella named her daughter Aliyah which we all understand to means to ‘ascend and to return to Israel’ as in to immigrate to Erez Israel. Three of my grandsons have very biblical first names. One of them is Isaiah Judah whom I call Judah and the other is Elijah whom I call Eliyahu. The other one is Nathaneel. By the way, my Hebrew name is Phinehas because of its proximity to Delfino. (I’m referring to the grandson of Aaron, son of Eliezer not the son of Eli.)

Tengo esta vaga recolección que compartiré reservadamente. No recuerdo si fue cuando Mama Cuca o Papa Abraham (mis bisabuelos maternos) murieron que mi madre cubrió los espejos en nuestra casa. Para mí, parecían más el modelo de los Judios Ashkenazitas más que el modelo de los Sefarditas. Por su puesto, la distinción era el idioma Español y sus historias orales que estaban arraigadas a España. La familia de mi Papa tenía una perspectiva mundial diferente a muchos otros, incluyendo a mi lado materno. Eran menos dados a tocarse unos a los otros aparte del saludo. Sus emociones eran menos expresivos y más filosóficos y cargaban un aire de nobleza social.

Todavía no tengo evidencias conclusivas pero puede ser que existen algunos Judios con sangre Levi fluyendo a través de la familia de mi Papa. MY LIFE -- Mi Vida PART 3

Sephardic Customs and Practices
I learned more about these practices from Mom’s family; but I learned many more dichos y refranes (sayings and clichés) from my Dad’s family—possibly because they were so “philosophical,” always questioning everything as a good Jew. It’s possible I would’ve found more customs and practices in Dad’s family had I spent more time there as I did in Mom’s parent’s home.
As a very young child, I saw how grandpa or my uncles would test the sharpness of a knife with their fingernail. I evidenced how grandpa would snap the neck of a chicken, drain all its blood and cover it with soil. It felt almost like a ceremony that everyone came out observe.
I often saw how my aunts made flour tortillas. By the way, if you look closely to a well-cooked flour tortilla, it looks like Jewish matzo because the fact is that many of our northern Mexico and South-Central Texas Anusim used the flour tortilla as their matzo while the southern Mexican Anusim used the corn tortilla. I’d see how Aunt Betsie (Elizabet) would amazar (knead the dough) and create a tiny pebble from it and cast it into the open fire before she begin placing the tortillas on the comal. I can almost remember her muttering a few words before she cast that pebble into the fire; but I just don’t know what she said. Since then I’ve had a deep intrinsic sense that it had to do something with repentance, the burning up of sins and requesting the blessings of God.
Both, Mama Panchita and my mother simply loved a particular Mexican sweet bread called, pan de Semita. All this time I thought they meant pan de semillita because of the tiny anise seeds it contained. What they were actually saying was bread of Semites. Interestingly, it was almost a duty that while buying Mexican sweet bread, you just had to buy the ginger bread shaped like a marranito, a little pig. Funny because in the last 10-15 years I’ve discovered I love ginger cookies and bread; but for some reason I couldn’t stand el marranito during my childhood. Maybe my soul knew something my brain did not--maybe because our ancestors were called Marranos.
As the first born, I experienced much more than my younger siblings because I had more time among my extended families. In the process, I’ll never forget how Mom prepared Dolly (who is five years younger than I) for Linda’s birth. I was around seven or eight when I clearly remember her telling us that she’d not leave the house for 40 days after the baby was born. There was something “holy” about the manner in which she told us this story. There was a kind of glow in that little bedroom when she told us what to expect after the baby’s birth. I just figured she’d not leave home for 40 days because of the physical implications of child bearing and not wanting to expose the infant to possible germs.
One other thing I just discovered here recently after reading a couple of books loan to me by Rabbi Cohen (or Rodfei Sholom) on kashrut. I found out that it’s the kosher way to get rid of an egg that contains a red blood spot in it. My mother always insisted we dump these eggs and not to touch or eat them. I’m wondering how many more things Mom and her sisters insisted on that were in line with a Jewish kashrut procedure.
Superstitions
What Dad was in spirituality, Mom was a bit apprehensive of old family tales. In fact, she and her sisters were a bit superstitious. They even had customs about what to and not to do after you cut your finger nails or your hair. In essence, we weren’t supposed to ever throw these elements on the ground outside. We weren’t supposed to let them blow into the wind either.
My mother and her siblings had a strong belief in what they called, el mal ojo–the evil eye. In fact, they had a theory that when a child was very cute and often attracted peoples’ stare, they’d hang what they called an ojo de venado (eye of a deer) around their neck to help prevent the evil eye. Some of the women that felt a child was very pretty or attractive would run their hand over their face from top to bottom while saying something such as, Ay que chulo (Oh how cute or pretty). While they did this they’d say something like, no le quiero hacer ojo. However, I believe there was also a very dark side to the mal ojo which led to their fear of maldiciones (curses) and acts of witchcraft lodged against them. The ojo de venado would help thwart these unclean spirits.
I remember while I was still a child, that one of my younger siblings suffered a great scare and became lascio, listless and weak. So she along with some neighbor and relative made some strange prayers over the child in shock. It seemed like it helped. Some of these methods were a type of folk healing such as the time I suffered a major scare by being pulled by a vehicle at a fast speed as I held on to the rear bumper until it stopped. I was rushed inside and given some water and sugar along with the advice to simply lie down and rest. But I didn’t even have a scratch just some torn jeans and a bewildered feeling of what in the world had gone wrong.

Costumbres y Practicas Sefardíes
Aprendí más tocante a estas prácticas de la familia de mi Mama, pero aprendí mas dichos y refranes de la familia de mi Papa—posiblemente porque eran tan filosóficos, siempre cuestionando todo como un buen Judío. Es posible que hubiera encontrado más costumbres y prácticas en la familia de mi Papa si hubiera tenido más tiempo como lo tuve con la familia de mi Mama.
Desde muy chico, yo vi como mi abuelo y mis tíos examinaban el filo del cuchillo con la uña. Note como mi abuelo (Papa Lupe) quebraba el pescuezo de la gallina, escurrilla la sangre y lo cubría con tierra. Me parecía esta práctica como un tipo de ceremonia que toda la familia observaba.
Muchas veces note como mis tías hacían tortillas de harina. Entre paréntesis, si nota usted con mucho cuidado lo que parece una tortilla bien hecha, va notar que parece mucho lo que se llama matzo (pan sin levadura) Judía. La verdad es que muchos del Sefardim Anusim del norte de México y el lado Sur-Central de Texas usaban sus tortillas de harina como su propio matzo mientras que en la zona sur de México el Anusim usaba la tortilla de maíz como su matzo. Yo veía como mi tía Bitsie (Elizabet) amasaba y como criaba una bolita pequeñita y lo lanzaba en la lumbre abierta sobre la estufa antes de empezar a poner las tortillas sobre el comal. Casi puedo recordar que hablaba en voz baja ciertas palabras antes de echar aquella bolita de masa en la lumbre, pero no recuerdo lo que decía. Desde entonces he tenido un sentir muy afondo que esto tenía que ver algo con arrepentimiento, el quemar de pecados y errores y pidiéndole a Dios Sus bendiciones.
Ambos, Mama Panchita y mi madre les encantaban el pan dulce Mexicano, particularmente lo que le llamaban el Pan de Semita. Todo este tiempo yo pensaba que esto significaba pan de semillita porque tenía semillitas pequeñitas de anise. Lo que actualmente decían era Pan de SEMITA no semillita, es decir Semita como los Judios son Semitas. Interesantemente, casi era una responsabilidad, al comprar pan dulce Mexicano, también comprar el pan que le llamábamos el marranito porque tenía forma de marrano. Raramente, en los últimos 10 a 15 años he descubierto que me gusta mucho la galletas de jengibre, pero por alguna razón no me gustaba el pan de marranito durante mi niñez. Quizá porque mi alma sabía algo que mi ceso no sabía--es decir que a nuestros ancestros les llamaban Marranos en tiempos de ataño.
Como el primogénito, yo experimente mucho más que mi hermano y hermanas menores porque tuve más tiempo entre mi familia extendida. En el proceso, nunca olvidare como mi madre preparo a mi hermana Dolly (que es cinco años menor que yo) para el nacimiento de mi hermana Linda. Yo tenía como siete u ocho años de edad cuando claramente recuerdo que nos dijo que no saldría de la casa por 40 días después del nacimiento del bebe. Había un tipo de iluminación en esa recamarita cuando nos dijo que esperar después del nacimiento. Solamente figuraba que no saldría de la casa por 40 días por las implicaciones físicas de dar a luz a una criatura y no querer exponer al bebe a gérmenes extraños.
Otra cosa que a penas descubrí después de leer unos libros emprestados a mí por el Rabino Cohen (de la sinagoga Rodfei Sholom) tocante al tema de kasrut o comidas permitidas por la religión Judía. Descubrí que es una responsabilidad Judía de echar fuera el huevo que tiene una manchita de sangre—pues mi madre insistía en esta práctica. Ahora me pongo a pensar cuantas cosas más mi madre y sus hermanas hacían e insistían que eran prácticas Judías de kashrut o kosher.
Supersticiones
Lo que mi padre era en espiritualidad, mi madre era más dada a cuentos antiguos y creencias familiares. Aún tenían costumbres en que hacer y no hacer después de cortar las unas o el cabello. En esencia, debíamos de nunca tirar estos elementos sobre la tierra. No debíamos dejar que el viento los volara hacia cualquier rumbo.
Mi madre y sus hermanas tenían una fuerte creencia en lo que se dice, el mal ojo. En realidad tenían una teoría que cuando un niño era muy bello o chulo, con frecuencia atraía la fija o el mirar de muchas personas así es que les colgaban lo que llamaban un ojo de venado alrededor de sus cuellos para prevenir el mal ojo. Algunas mujeres que sentían que algún niño era muy hermoso al parecer decían, Ay que chulo y corrían su mano sobre su cabeza o sobre el rostro de la carita del niño y a veces mientras lo hacían también decían, para no hacerle mal ojo. Yo creo que todo esto era muy sincero e inocente, no obstante había un lado oscuro a todo esto también. El lado oscuro tenía que ver con ciertas maldiciones que algunos ponían de parte de brujos y curanderas. El ojo de venado era para repelar todas estas maldiciones según esta superstición o creencia.
Recuerdo cuando era muy pequeño que una de mis hermanitas sufrió un susto muy grave para ella y se puso lascio, débil y sin fuerza. Así es que mi madre, junto con una vecina y una pariente cercano hicieron una oración y una breve ceremonia rara a mi parecer contra este susto. Me parece que ayudo esta oración. Algunos de estos métodos eran de tipo de sanidad doméstica o familiar tal como el día cuando fui arrastrado por un vehículo en tanto yo me quede agarrado de la parte posterior del vehículo (el bumper). Al fin, cuando se detuvo el vehículo, pronto me llevaron para dentro de la casa, me dieron agua y azúcar con el consejo de solamente descansar sobre mi cama. Pero no tenía ni aun un rascón o cortada solamente pantalones rotos y un sentir de susto y confusión peculiar que algo muy peligroso me habían acontecido. (Esto sucedió en los días cuando ciertos vehículos viejos no querían prender así es que se les daba un empujón a mano para forzar al motor que prendiera…)

Sephardic Customs and Practices
I learned more about these practices from Mom’s family; but I learned many more dichos y refranes (sayings and clichés) from my Dad’s family—possibly because they were so “philosophical,” always questioning everything as a good Jew. It’s possible I would’ve found more customs and practices in Dad’s family had I spent more time there as I did in Mom’s parent’s home.
As a very young child, I saw how grandpa or my uncles would test the sharpness of a knife with their fingernail. I evidenced how grandpa would snap the neck of a chicken, drain all its blood and cover it with soil. It felt almost like a ceremony that everyone came out observe.
I often saw how my aunts made flour tortillas. By the way, if you look closely to a well-cooked flour tortilla, it looks like Jewish matzo because the fact is that many of our northern Mexico and South-Central Texas Anusim used the flour tortilla as their matzo while the southern Mexican Anusim used the corn tortilla. I’d see how Aunt Betsie (Elizabet) would amazar (knead the dough) and create a tiny pebble from it and cast it into the open fire before she begin placing the tortillas on the comal. I can almost remember her muttering a few words before she cast that pebble into the fire; but I just don’t know what she said. Since then I’ve had a deep intrinsic sense that it had to do something with repentance, the burning up of sins and requesting the blessings of God.
Both, Mama Panchita and my mother simply loved a particular Mexican sweet bread called, pan de Semita. All this time I thought they meant pan de semillita because of the tiny anise seeds it contained. What they were actually saying was bread of Semites. Interestingly, it was almost a duty that while buying Mexican sweet bread, you just had to buy the ginger bread shaped like a marranito, a little pig. Funny because in the last 10-15 years I’ve discovered I love ginger cookies and bread; but for some reason I couldn’t stand el marranito during my childhood. Maybe my soul knew something my brain did not--maybe because our ancestors were called Marranos.
As the first born, I experienced much more than my younger siblings because I had more time among my extended families. In the process, I’ll never forget how Mom prepared Dolly (who is five years younger than I) for Linda’s birth. I was around seven or eight when I clearly remember her telling us that she’d not leave the house for 40 days after the baby was born. There was something “holy” about the manner in which she told us this story. There was a kind of glow in that little bedroom when she told us what to expect after the baby’s birth. I just figured she’d not leave home for 40 days because of the physical implications of child bearing and not wanting to expose the infant to possible germs.
One other thing I just discovered here recently after reading a couple of books loan to me by Rabbi Cohen (or Rodfei Sholom) on kashrut. I found out that it’s the kosher way to get rid of an egg that contains a red blood spot in it. My mother always insisted we dump these eggs and not to touch or eat them. I’m wondering how many more things Mom and her sisters insisted on that were in line with a Jewish kashrut procedure.
Superstitions
What Dad was in spirituality, Mom was a bit apprehensive of old family tales. In fact, she and her sisters were a bit superstitious. They even had customs about what to and not to do after you cut your finger nails or your hair. In essence, we weren’t supposed to ever throw these elements on the ground outside. We weren’t supposed to let them blow into the wind either.
My mother and her siblings had a strong belief in what they called, el mal ojo–the evil eye. In fact, they had a theory that when a child was very cute and often attracted peoples’ stare, they’d hang what they called an ojo de venado (eye of a deer) around their neck to help prevent the evil eye. Some of the women that felt a child was very pretty or attractive would run their hand over their face from top to bottom while saying something such as, Ay que chulo (Oh how cute or pretty). While they did this they’d say something like, no le quiero hacer ojo. However, I believe there was also a very dark side to the mal ojo which led to their fear of maldiciones (curses) and acts of witchcraft lodged against them. The ojo de venado would help thwart these unclean spirits.
I remember while I was still a child, that one of my younger siblings suffered a great scare and became lascio, listless and weak. So she along with some neighbor and relative made some strange prayers over the child in shock. It seemed like it helped. Some of these methods were a type of folk healing such as the time I suffered a major scare by being pulled by a vehicle at a fast speed as I held on to the rear bumper until it stopped. I was rushed inside and given some water and sugar along with the advice to simply lie down and rest. But I didn’t even have a scratch just some torn jeans and a bewildered feeling of what in the world had gone wrong.

Costumbres y Practicas Sefardíes
Aprendí más tocante a estas prácticas de la familia de mi Mama, pero aprendí mas dichos y refranes de la familia de mi Papa—posiblemente porque eran tan filosóficos, siempre cuestionando todo como un buen Judío. Es posible que hubiera encontrado más costumbres y prácticas en la familia de mi Papa si hubiera tenido más tiempo como lo tuve con la familia de mi Mama.
Desde muy chico, yo vi como mi abuelo y mis tíos examinaban el filo del cuchillo con la uña. Note como mi abuelo (Papa Lupe) quebraba el pescuezo de la gallina, escurrilla la sangre y lo cubría con tierra. Me parecía esta práctica como un tipo de ceremonia que toda la familia observaba.
Muchas veces note como mis tías hacían tortillas de harina. Entre paréntesis, si nota usted con mucho cuidado lo que parece una tortilla bien hecha, va notar que parece mucho lo que se llama matzo (pan sin levadura) Judía. La verdad es que muchos del Sefardim Anusim del norte de México y el lado Sur-Central de Texas usaban sus tortillas de harina como su propio matzo mientras que en la zona sur de México el Anusim usaba la tortilla de maíz como su matzo. Yo veía como mi tía Bitsie (Elizabet) amasaba y como criaba una bolita pequeñita y lo lanzaba en la lumbre abierta sobre la estufa antes de empezar a poner las tortillas sobre el comal. Sephardic Anusim Intermarrying
What is very interesting is how our parents and their forefathers wound up marrying among our own people. In some instances, they found each other despite their coming from different Spanish kingdoms that were pioneered and settled by secret Jews of Iberia. This only goes to show the extent to which our forefathers would go in order to marry entre nuestra misma gente. (This reminds me of our Bible patriarchs such as Isaac and Jacob whose wives were fetched from related families in faraway lands.)
There is an interesting parallel between the marriage of my parents, Helen’s parents and Helen and I. For instance, Helen’s paternal grandparents came from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. Her father was born in Del Rio, Texas. This was in El Nuevo Reino del Leon. He managed to find his wife who was from La Nueva Galicia in northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.
In like manner, my father’s paternal family came from Montemorelos, Mexico in El Nuevo Reino del Leon. Similar to Helen’s case, grandfather Delfino married a Sephardic girl of the Tafolla family from among the founders of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Many of them wound up here in San Antonio, Texas. His wife died early in their marriage so grandfather Delfino married an Elizondo girl from a large Sephardic family of the epicenter of Sephardic Anusim in El Nuevo Reino de Leon in Monterrey, Mexico. (By the way, Don Luis de Carvajal was the first known Sephardi to enter this land but another Sephardi by name of Don Diego de Montemayor was the better known founder/leader of Monterey.
Me? I found Helen in a southern California college. She’d come from La Nueva Galicia in Colorado and I’d come from El Nuevo Reino del Leon in Texas. I beat my grandparents in terms of how far I went in order to find my Sephardic wife hundreds of miles to the west.
Traces of our history can be seen in the Jewish Talmud – “Tinnok Shenishba Beyin Hagogim.”
While our forefathers were yet in Spain many of their children were kidnapped from their Sephardic parents and placed in Catholic homes, including Catholic institutions. When Jews were expelled from Portugal in 1497, all children 14 or younger were taken from their families and also placed in Catholic homes to be reared as Gentile Catholics. Dr. Rabbi Marc D. Angel, Chief Rabbi Emeritus of Shearith Israel in NYC specifically revealed to me that the Talmud states that as these children of the survivors of the Inquisitions awaken to their true Jewish roots, the Jewish community is to assist them in their recovery from a Gentile society.
In my case, it wasn’t that I was reared by someone else—because I wasn’t supposed to be born at all. My mother had lost five or six infants due to miscarriage. Specialists told her to give up on her efforts to have a child and to simply adopt. But Dad refused their report so he locked himself in my maternal grandparent’s home in a Westside barrio and cried out to the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for a son to Whom he’d dedicate for his entire life (kind of like little Samuel of the Old Testament, the Tanakh).
This was the home where, as a boy, I’d often hear Papa Lupe read the Scripture that refers to something very beautiful in Israel’s Desert, the Negev. This Scripture is found in Yesha’Yahu 35:6: Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. -- Grandpa often quoted this entire passage so every time I’d hear him say “Manantiales en el desierto” something more profound than words can express would leap with expectancy and a mysterious sense of belonging—like something I would connect and become one with at some point in my life.
Papa Lupe’s home was very humble on a shotgun lot on Torreon alley. However, his home was the most pro-Israel, pro-Jewish home I’ve ever experienced. This is where I learned about some of our mysterious Sephardic customs and practices. However, despite all these ancient practices and customs, they used to think these practices were merely cultural or familial at best, but not Jewish. They had been disconnected for way too long to perceive the underpinnings of their relevance to their Sephardic Anusim ancestry. Funny thing, every time Helen and I travel through Israel, it’s like seeing my family and community all over the place. They not only look identical but behave like them.

Casamiento Entre Sefardíes Anusim
Lo que me parece más interesante es como nuestros ancestros se casaban entre nuestro mismo pueblo. En algunos instantes, los hombres y mujeres se encontraban a pesar de que vivían en diferentes reinos que fueron establecidos por Judios secretos de Iberia. Esto comprueba hasta qué punto y hasta donde iban para casarse entre la misma gente de uno. (Esto me recuerda de los patriarcas bíblicos como Isaac y Jacob cuyas esposas fueron traídas de familiares desde tierras lejanas.)
Hay un paralelo interesante entre el casamiento de mis padres…los padres de Helen y también el mío con Helen. Por ejemplo, los padres paternos de Helen vinieron de Ciudad Acuña, México. Su padre nació en Del Rio, Texas. Este era el Nuevo Reino del León. El logro encontrar a su esposa que era del Nuevo Reino de Galicia en el norte de Nuevo México y el Sur de Colorado.
De semejante manera, la familia paterna de mi padre vino de Montemorelos, México en el Nuevo Reino del León. Semejante al caso de Helen, mi abuelo Delfino se casó con una mujer Sefardí de la familia Tafolla de entre los fundadores de Santa Fe, Nuevo México, de la Nueva Galicia. Muchos de ellos llegaron hasta San Antonio, Texas. Su esposa se murió temprano en su matrimonio así es que abuelo Delfino se casó con una mujer Elizondo de una familia grande de Monterrey, México. (Suele ser que Don Luis de Carvajal fue el primer líder Sefardí para entrar esta tierra pero otro Sefardí llamado Don Diego de Montemayor fue el mejor conocido como el fundador y líder de Monterrey.
¿Y yo? Yo encontré a Helen en un colegio en el Sur de California. Ella había venido del Nuevo Reino de Galicia en Colorado y yo del Nuevo Reino del León en Texas. Le gane a mis abuelos en términos de la distancia de donde encontré a mi esposa mas de mil millas al oeste de mi.

Mientras que nuestros ancestros estaban todavía en España, muchos de los hijitos fueron secuestrados de sus familias Sefardíes y puestos en hogares e instituciones Católicos. Pero mi padre rehusó este reporte y se atranco en un cuarto de mis abuelos maternos en un barrio del oeste de mi ciudad en tanto le clamaba al Dios de Abraham, Isaac y Jacob por un hijo a quien el dedicaría para el servicio del Su reino (tal como el niñito Samuel en el Antiguo Testamento o el Tanakh).
Este fue el hogar donde, de niño, muy seguido oía a Papa Lupe leer las Escrituras Sagradas que se refieren a algo muy bello tocante al desierto de Israel, el Neguev. Esta Escritura se encuentra en el libro de Yeshua-Yahu (Isaías) 35:6 donde dice que los cojos saltaran como venados y los mudos gritaran con gozo. También dice que agua saldrá en lugares áridos como fuentes en el desierto. Papa Lupe a menudo leía este pasaje y cuando yo oía el verso que dice, Manantiales en el desierto algo muy profundo en estas palabras brincaba dentro de mí con expectativa y con un sentir de que yo pertenecía a esta tierra—como algo con la cual yo conectaría y me volvería en uno con este Neguev a cierto punto en mi vida.
El hogar de Papa Lupe era un hogar muy humilde en un pedazo de tierra larga y muy angosta en el callejón de Torreón. No obstante, su casa era un hogar totalmente pro-Israel y pro-Judios. Aquí es donde yo aprendí algunos de los misterios de las costumbres y practicas Sefardíes. No obstante, a pesar de todas estas prácticas antiguas, ellos pensaban que estas prácticas eran meramente cultural o familiar, pero no Judío. Ellos habían sido desconectados por tanto tiempo que no apercibían las raíces de su relevancia a las raíces ancestrales del Sefardim Judío. Lo raro es que cada vez que Helen y yo viajamos a Israel, es como el ver a nuestra familia y comunidad por donde quiera que vayamos. No tan solo se parecen los Judios Israelíes a nosotros pero también se portan como nosotros.

Sephardic Anusim Intermarrying
What is very interesting is how our parents and their forefathers wound up marrying among our own people. In some instances, they found each other despite their coming from different Spanish kingdoms that were pioneered and settled by secret Jews of Iberia. This only goes to show the extent to which our forefathers would go in order to marry entre nuestra misma gente. (This reminds me of our Bible patriarchs such as Isaac and Jacob whose wives were fetched from related families in faraway lands.)
There is an interesting parallel between the marriage of my parents, Helen’s parents and Helen and I. For instance, Helen’s paternal grandparents came from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. Her father was born in Del Rio, Texas. This was in El Nuevo Reino del Leon. He managed to find his wife who was from La Nueva Galicia in northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.
In like manner, my father’s paternal family came from Montemorelos, Mexico in El Nuevo Reino del Leon. Similar to Helen’s case, grandfather Delfino married a Sephardic girl of the Tafolla family from among the founders of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Many of them wound up here in San Antonio, Texas. His wife died early in their marriage so grandfather Delfino married an Elizondo girl from a large Sephardic family of the epicenter of Sephardic Anusim in El Nuevo Reino de Leon in Monterrey, Mexico. (By the way, Don Luis de Carvajal was the first known Sephardi to enter this land but another Sephardi by name of Don Diego de Montemayor was the better known founder/leader of Monterey.
Me? I found Helen in a southern California college. She’d come from La Nueva Galicia in Colorado and I’d come from El Nuevo Reino del Leon in Texas. I beat my grandparents in terms of how far I went in order to find my Sephardic wife hundreds of miles to the west.
Traces of our history can be seen in the Jewish Talmud – “Tinnok Shenishba Beyin Hagogim.”
While our forefathers were yet in Spain many of their children were kidnapped from their Sephardic parents and placed in Catholic homes, including Catholic institutions. When Jews were expelled from Portugal in 1497, all children 14 or younger were taken from their families and also placed in Catholic homes to be reared as Gentile Catholics. Dr. Rabbi Marc D. Angel, Chief Rabbi Emeritus of Shearith Israel in NYC specifically revealed to me that the Talmud states that as these children of the survivors of the Inquisitions awaken to their true Jewish roots, the Jewish community is to assist them in their recovery from a Gentile society.
In my case, it wasn’t that I was reared by someone else—because I wasn’t supposed to be born at all. My mother had lost five or six infants due to miscarriage. Specialists told her to give up on her efforts to have a child and to simply adopt. But Dad refused their report so he locked himself in my maternal grandparent’s home in a Westside barrio and cried out to the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for a son to Whom he’d dedicate for his entire life (kind of like little Samuel of the Old Testament, the Tanakh).
This was the home where, as a boy, I’d often hear Papa Lupe read the Scripture that refers to something very beautiful in Israel’s Desert, the Negev. This Scripture is found in Yesha’Yahu 35:6: Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. -- Grandpa often quoted this entire passage so every time I’d hear him say “Manantiales en el desierto” something more profound than words can express would leap with expectancy and a mysterious sense of belonging—like something I would connect and become one with at some point in my life.
Papa Lupe’s home was very humble on a shotgun lot on Torreon alley. However, his home was the most pro-Israel, pro-Jewish home I’ve ever experienced. This is where I learned about some of our mysterious Sephardic customs and practices. However, despite all these ancient practices and customs, they used to think these practices were merely cultural or familial at best, but not Jewish. They had been disconnected for way too long to perceive the underpinnings of their relevance to their Sephardic Anusim ancestry. Funny thing, every time Helen and I travel through Israel, it’s like seeing my family and community all over the place. They not only look identical but behave like them.

Casamiento Entre Sefardíes Anusim
Lo que me parece más interesante es como nuestros ancestros se casaban entre nuestro mismo pueblo. En algunos instantes, los hombres y mujeres se encontraban a pesar de que vivían en diferentes reinos que fueron establecidos por Judios secretos de Iberia. Esto comprueba hasta qué punto y hasta donde iban para casarse entre la misma gente de uno. (Esto me recuerda de los patriarcas bíblicos como Isaac y Jacob cuyas esposas fueron traídas de familiares desde tierras lejanas.)
Hay un paralelo interesante entre el casamiento de mis padres…los padres de Helen y también el mío con Helen. Por ejemplo, los padres paternos de Helen vinieron de Ciudad Acuña, México. Su padre nació en Del Rio, Texas. Este era el Nuevo Reino del León. El logro encontrar a su esposa que era del Nuevo Reino de Galicia en el norte de Nuevo México y el Sur de Colorado.
De semejante manera, la familia paterna de mi padre vino de Montemorelos, México en el Nuevo Reino del León. Semejante al caso de Helen, mi abuelo Delfino se casó con una mujer Sefardí de la familia Tafolla de entre los fundadores de Santa Fe, Nuevo México, de la Nueva Galicia. Muchos de ellos llegaron hasta San Antonio, Texas. Su esposa se murió temprano en su matrimonio así es que abuelo Delfino se casó con una mujer Elizondo de una familia grande de Monterrey, México. (Suele ser que Don Luis de Carvajal fue el primer líder Sefardí para entrar esta tierra pero otro Sefardí llamado Don Diego de Montemayor fue el mejor conocido como el fundador y líder de Monterrey.
¿Y yo? Yo encontré a Helen en un colegio en el Sur de California. Ella había venido del Nuevo Reino de Galicia en Colorado y yo del Nuevo Reino del León en Texas. Le gane a mis abuelos en términos de la distancia de donde encontré a mi esposa mas de mil millas al oeste de mi.

Este fue el hogar donde, de niño, muy seguido oía a Papa Lupe leer las Escrituras Sagradas que se refieren a algo muy bello tocante al desierto de Israel, el Neguev. Esta Escritura se encuentra en el libro de Yeshua-Yahu (Isaías) 35:6 donde dice que los cojos saltaran como venados y los mudos gritaran con gozo. También dice que agua saldrá en lugares áridos como fuentes en el desierto. Papa Lupe a menudo leía este pasaje y cuando yo oía el verso que dice, Manantiales en el desierto algo muy profundo en estas palabras brincaba dentro de mí con expectativa y con un sentir de que yo pertenecía a esta tierra—como algo con la cual yo conectaría y me volvería en uno con este Neguev a cierto punto en mi vida.
El hogar de Papa Lupe era un hogar muy humilde en un pedazo de tierra larga y muy angosta en el callejón de Torreón. No obstante, su casa era un hogar totalmente pro-Israel y pro-Judios. Aquí es donde yo aprendí algunos de los misterios de las costumbres y practicas Sefardíes. No obstante, a pesar de todas estas prácticas antiguas, ellos pensaban que estas prácticas eran meramente cultural o familiar, pero no Judío. Ellos habían sido desconectados por tanto tiempo que no apercibían las raíces de su relevancia a las raíces ancestrales del Sefardim Judío. Lo raro es que cada vez que Helen y yo viajamos a Israel, es como el ver a nuestra familia y comunidad por donde quiera que vayamos. No tan solo se parecen los Judios Israelíes a nosotros pero también se portan como nosotros.

This is Part One of a synthesis of the discoveries I’ve made regarding my Sephardic Anusim roots.
Esta es Parte Uno de una síntesis de los descubrimientos que he hecho tocante a mis
raíces Sefardíes Anusim.
This is a bird’s eye view of my personal story which includes a tad of hard science/DNA, a dab of onomastics, another tad of genealogy and a ton of personal history.
It’s significant that after 15 years on this trek, finally, Israeli intelligentsia is hosting a conference on my people: THE WORLDWIDE AWAKENING OF THE DESCENDANTS OF SECRET JEWS (ANUSIM).
Introduction
My name is Delfino F. (Flores) Sanchez, also known as Dell since 1961. I’m the son of Delfino and Linda Sanchez, born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. I attended college and university here in town as well as in California. Helen and I have been married 48 years. We have three children, ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter named after Helen (Elena) which is quite Sephardic in custom.
I have served on the faculty of various colleges and universities including the Worden School of Social Services at Our Lady of the Lake University here in town, as well as Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. I founded and directed an educational television station (KHCE TV-23). During this time, I was head pastor for twenty-four years of a bilingual, Evangelical congregation in this city’s Westside where my father was the virtual founder in the mid 1950’s. I come from a long line of minsters on both sides of my parents.
Upon discovery of my true Sephardic Anusim heritage in 1996, I launched myself into a life of inquiry and investigation. Helen and I have traveled tens of thousands of miles during these years of discovery. Since then, we’ve traveled to many institutions of higher learning and archive centers all across the Southwest of the USA including Mexico, Spain and twice a year to Israel—in search of our roots.
Since then, I’ve published ten books, five of which are in English; four are translated into Spanish and one into German. My recent book is titled, “Out from Hiding—Evidences of Sephardic roots among Latinos.” This book is a micro synthesis of what we’ve learned in the last 15 years. I must say the knowledge of Sephardic Anusim roots was shocking to me but not to Helen. She and her entire extended family have forever known they’re Sephardic Anusim—descendants of the Secret Jews of Spain.
For thirty-five years, up until 1996, I always questioned the accuracy of Helen’s admission until I dug deep enough to confirm this truth. Alas, I’m a bona fide believer in my true roots and everything in my life has changed in a most profound and fulfilling way. My calendar has changed and so have my feasts and holidays…my friends and community has changed…my history and my destiny have changed…my place of worship has changed, some elements I wear to worship have changed…the food I eat and don’t eat has changed...the place of my ancestors’ origin has changed to Erez Israel; and a host of other significant customs, practices and behaviors have all dramatically changed. I’ll touch on just a few of these throughout my platica. Even my sense of belonging has changed. I know not only where I belong but that I belong because I’ve felt out of place all of my life up until now.
Bird’s Eye View of our ancestors’ origins
Before going into a few of my gazillion discoveries, let me say that DNA evidence points heavily to Spain as my maternal father as well as Helen’s maternal father’s recent origin going back a few hundred years. Recent DNA advances reveal that my father’s paternal side is from Tuscan, Italy; although our ancient origins point to a Uralic language with its center in areas of Finland.
Separate from our maternal ancestors coming from Iberia, some of our ancient ethnic origin of many of our ancestral women is Eurasia. It so happens that Asia ends and Europe begins in Turkey. However, I must point out that just north of Turkey is Russia; and we know Russia to be quite huge in size and diversity of cultures, races and religions. My private observation is that thousands of years ago, many of our maternal ancestors came from these regions of the world.
Through the centuries, the ancestors of Anusim women wound up in northeastern Mexico. Many centuries later, this region became the enormous Spanish Land Grant given to a(compassionate) Sephardic Conquistador, Don Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva, and viceroy of El Nuevo Reino del Leon. Due to them marrying Anusim men, many of our maternal ancestors suffered in the Mexican as well as the New Mexican Inquisitions which were the “slow holocausts” of our ancestors.
Interestingly, Helen’s maternal ancestors lived many generations in La Nueva Galicia which includes northeastern Mexico, northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Her paternal ancestors were like my ancestors within El Nuevo Reino del Leon.
Helen’s maternal ancestors wound up in northern New Mexico, perhaps in Colonial days but certainly during the settlement of New Mexico in the 1600’s by Sephardic Anusim Jews under Don Juan de Onate and de Vargas. Meanwhile my ancestors crossed the Rio Grande during the tumultuous times between Mexico’s liberation from France and La Revolucion Mexicana and into south-central Texas.

Este es un vistazo de pájaro de mi vida personal que incluye un poco de la ciencia de ADN, un poco de onomásticas y otro poco de genealogía y un montón de historial personal.

Tenemos dos hijas y un hijo, diez nietos y una biznieta llamada como su bisabuela, mi esposa Helen (Elena), cosa que es muy común entre Sefardíes.
He servido en la facultad de varios colegios y universidades incluyendo el la escuela de servicio social (Worden) de la Universidad Our Lady of the Lake en San Antonio como también la Universidad del Estado de Arizona en Tempe. Funde y dirige una estación de televisión educacional (KHCE TV-23). Durante este tiempo, fui pastor por 24 años de una congregación Evangélica bilingüe en un barrio de mi ciudad nativa de San Antonio. Mi padre virtualmente fundo esta congregación en el año 1955. Cuando descubrí mi verdadera heredad Sefardí Anusim en 1996, me lance a una vida de búsqueda e investigación. Helen y yo hemos viajado decenares de miles de millas durante estos años de descubrimiento. Desde entonces hemos viajado a instituciones de alto aprendizaje y centros de archivos a través de todos los estados del Suroeste de los Estados Unidos incluyendo México, España y dos veces al año a Israel—en búsqueda de nuestras raíces.
Desde entonces, he publicado diez libros, cinco de los cuales están en inglés, cuatro están traducidos al español y uno en alemán. Mi reciente libro que solo está en ingles hasta que lo traduzca se intitula, Out from Hiding—Evidences of Sephardic roots among Latinos. Este libro es un micro síntesis de lo que hemos aprendido en los últimos 15 anos. Debo decir que el conocimiento de las raíces del Sefardim Anusim nos ha dado un choque por lo que hemos aprendido. No obstante, la familia entera de Helen para siempre han sabido que tienen raíces Sefardíes Anusim—y que son descendientes de los Judios secretos de España.
Por 35 años, hasta el año 1996, siempre cuestionaba la veracidad de la admisión de Helen tocante a sus raíces hasta que escarbe suficientemente para confirmar esta verdad. Al fin de todo, ahora soy un creyente en mis raíces verdaderas y todo en mi vida ha cambiado en una manera profunda que trae gran satisfacción a mi vida. Mi calendario ha cambiado y también las fiestas que celebro y los días santos…mi lugar de adoración ha cambiado, algunos elementos de los cuales me visto ha cambiado…la comida que comemos y no comemos ha cambiado…el lugar de orígenes de mis ancestros ha cambiado a Erez Israel, y un sin número de otras costumbres, prácticas y comportamientos han cambiado radicalmente. Después toco sobre estos puntos a través de esta platica. Aun mi perspectiva de donde pertenezco ha cambiado. Ahora no tan solo se dónde pertenezco pero donde no pertenezco también.
Un Vistazo de Pájaro de los Orígenes de Nuestros Ancestros
Antes de entrar en un sin número de descubrimientos, déjeme decir que la evidencia de ADN apunta marcadamente a España porque mi abuelo matero como también el abuelo materno de Helen apuntan a España a través de los últimos siglos. Recientemente, las evidencias de ADN revelan que mi abuelo paterno tiene firmes raíces en Tascan, Italia pero también con raíces Sefardíes. No obstante, las raíces de mi padre apuntan hacia Finlandia y países de lengua Uralic.
A parte de nuestros ancestros maternos viniendo de Iberia (España y Portugal), algunos de nuestros orígenes más antiguos vienen de Eurasia. Suele ser que donde termina Asia empieza Europa en Turquía. No obstante, debo decir que hacia el norte de Turquía esta Rusia. Y sabemos que Rusia es demasiado grande con gran diversidad de culturas, razas y religiones. Mi observación personal es que miles de años pasados, muchos de nuestros ancestros maternos vinieron de estas regiones del mundo.
A través de los siglos, los ancestros de las mujeres Anusim llegaron al noreste de México. Muchos siglos después, esta región se tornó en una enorme porción dada por el Rey Felipe II a Don Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva. Don Luis era un Conquistador compasivo y virrey del Nuevo Reino del León, responsable directamente al Rey Felipe. Dado que muchas de estas mujeres casándose con hombre Anusim, muchas de nuestros ancestros sufrieron en la Inquisición Mexicana como también la Inquisición de Nuevo México cuales yo llamo los holocaustos lentos porque duraron cienes de anos.
Interesantemente, los ancestros maternos de Helen vivieron en muchas generaciones en La Nueva Galicia que incluye la parte noroeste de México, la parte norte de Nuevo México y el Sur de Colorado. Sus ancestros paternos eran tal como los míos del Nuevo Reino del León.
Los ancestros maternos de Helen se establecieron en el norte de Nuevo México, quizá durante los días Coloniales. Establecieron sus comunidades en Nuevo México durante el siglo 17 bajo la dirección de Don Juan de Oñate, un Sefardí Anusim. Esto fue durante días muy tumultuosos entre la liberación de México de Francia y la Revolucion Mexicana hasta la parte sur-central de Texas.

Historia de Dell F. Sánchez
Este es un vistazo de pájaro de mi vida personal que incluye un poco de la ciencia de ADN, un poco de onomásticas y otro poco de genealogía y un montón de historial personal.
Es significante que después de 15 años en esta senda, al fin de todo, la inteligencia Israeli está celebrando una conferencia sobre mi gente: EL DESPERTAMIENTO MUNDIAL DE LOS DESCENDIENTES DE LOS JUDIOS SECRETOS (ANUSIM).
Introducción
Mi nombre es Delfino F. (Flores) Sánchez, conocido como Dell desde 1961. Soy el hijo de Delfino y Linda Sánchez, nacido y criado en San Antonio, Texas. Atendí un colegio y universidad aquí en mi ciudad y también en California. Helen y yo tenemos 48 años de casados. Tenemos dos hijas y un hijo, diez nietos y una biznieta llamada como su bisabuela, mi esposa Helen (Elena), cosa que es muy común entre Sefardíes.
He servido en la facultad de varios colegios y universidades incluyendo el la escuela de servicio social (Worden) de la Universidad Our Lady of the Lake en San Antonio como también la Universidad del Estado de Arizona en Tempe. Funde y dirige una estación de televisión educacional (KHCE TV-23). Durante este tiempo, fui pastor por 24 años de una congregación Evangélica bilingüe en un barrio de mi ciudad nativa de San Antonio. Mi padre virtualmente fundo esta congregación en el año 1955. Desciendo de una línea larga de ministros en ambos lados de mis padres.
Cuando descubrí mi verdadera heredad Sefardí Anusim en 1996, me lance a una vida de búsqueda e investigación. Helen y yo hemos viajado decenares de miles de millas durante estos años de descubrimiento. Desde entonces hemos viajado a instituciones de alto aprendizaje y centros de archivos a través de todos los estados del Suroeste de los Estados Unidos incluyendo México, España y dos veces al año a Israel—en búsqueda de nuestras raíces.
Desde entonces, he publicado diez libros, cinco de los cuales están en inglés, cuatro están traducidos al español y uno en alemán. Mi reciente libro que solo está en ingles hasta que lo traduzca se intitula, Out from Hiding—Evidences of Sephardic roots among Latinos. Este libro es un micro síntesis de lo que hemos aprendido en los últimos 15 anos. Debo decir que el conocimiento de las raíces del Sefardim Anusim nos ha dado un choque por lo que hemos aprendido. No obstante, la familia entera de Helen para siempre han sabido que tienen raíces Sefardíes Anusim—y que son descendientes de los Judios secretos de España.
Por 35 años, hasta el año 1996, siempre cuestionaba la veracidad de la admisión de Helen tocante a sus raíces hasta que escarbe suficientemente para confirmar esta verdad. Al fin de todo, ahora soy un creyente en mis raíces verdaderas y todo en mi vida ha cambiado en una manera profunda que trae gran satisfacción a mi vida. Mi calendario ha cambiado y también las fiestas que celebro y los días santos…mi lugar de adoración ha cambiado, algunos elementos de los cuales me visto ha cambiado…la comida que comemos y no comemos ha cambiado…el lugar de orígenes de mis ancestros ha cambiado a Erez Israel, y un sin número de otras costumbres, prácticas y comportamientos han cambiado radicalmente. Después toco sobre estos puntos a través de esta platica. Aun mi perspectiva de donde pertenezco ha cambiado. Ahora no tan solo se dónde pertenezco pero donde no pertenezco también.
Un Vistazo de Pájaro de los Orígenes de Nuestros Ancestros
Antes de entrar en un sin número de descubrimientos, déjeme decir que la evidencia de ADN apunta marcadamente a España porque mi abuelo matero como también el abuelo materno de Helen apuntan a España a través de los últimos siglos. Recientemente, las evidencias de ADN revelan que mi abuelo paterno tiene firmes raíces en Tascan, Italia pero también con raíces Sefardíes. No obstante, las raíces de mi padre apuntan hacia Finlandia y países de lengua Uralic.
A parte de nuestros ancestros maternos viniendo de Iberia (España y Portugal), algunos de nuestros orígenes más antiguos vienen de Eurasia. Suele ser que donde termina Asia empieza Europa en Turquía. No obstante, debo decir que hacia el norte de Turquía esta Rusia. Y sabemos que Rusia es demasiado grande con gran diversidad de culturas, razas y religiones. Mi observación personal es que miles de años pasados, muchos de nuestros ancestros maternos vinieron de estas regiones del mundo.
A través de los siglos, los ancestros de las mujeres Anusim llegaron al noreste de México. Muchos siglos después, esta región se tornó en una enorme porción dada por el Rey Felipe II a Don Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva. Don Luis era un Conquistador compasivo y virrey del Nuevo Reino del León, responsable directamente al Rey Felipe. Dado que muchas de estas mujeres casándose con hombre Anusim, muchas de nuestros ancestros sufrieron en la Inquisición Mexicana como también la Inquisición de Nuevo México cuales yo llamo los holocaustos lentos porque duraron cienes de anos.
Interesantemente, los ancestros maternos de Helen vivieron en muchas generaciones en La Nueva Galicia que incluye la parte noroeste de México, la parte norte de Nuevo México y el Sur de Colorado. Sus ancestros paternos eran tal como los míos del Nuevo Reino del León.
Los ancestros maternos de Helen se establecieron en el norte de Nuevo México, quizá durante los días Coloniales. Establecieron sus comunidades en Nuevo México durante el siglo 17 bajo la dirección de Don Juan de Oñate, un Sefardí Anusim. Esto fue durante días muy tumultuosos entre la liberación de México de Francia y la Revolucion Mexicana hasta la parte sur-central de Texas.

I would’ve never imagined, before 9/11, that the day was coming when our streets and malls would be packed with military and police officers armed with assault rifles due to terror threats. Such is the case in DC and NYC during this 10th anniversary since that infamous day of 9/11.
But what is the relevance, if any, between 9/11 and the Jewish (Biblical) High Holy Days that are upon us now?
On 9/11, America was attacked by terrorist Moslem Arabs. This was at the eve of the Jewish High Holy Days. Twenty-eight years prior to 9/11, in 1973, most of the Arab nations in the Middle East attacked Israel during the High Holy Days. This happened on the holiest day of the year—Yom Kippur (the Yom Kippur War or the Day of Atonement).
Here we are today being threatened again on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. When does it all stop? It stops with Messiah and His troops. Jews say Messiah will be Messiah Ben David, Christians say it’ll be the Son of David, Yeshua (Jesus).
On the other hand, Moslems expect their own messiah called, “Mahdi.” In fact, I believe he’s late according to their own predictions. So they’re trying to force a world-wide Intifada that’ll usher in their messiah before the true Messiah comes.
At a time of terror around the world and fears of an economic collapse in America, Messiah is soon to come. Whether you’re Jewish or Christian, there is hope!
Imagine for a moment a Messiah-King without need of presidents, prime ministers and rulers. Imagine a government without politicians, democrats, republicans, libertarians, socialists, communists and anarchists. Imagine no more wars in the Middle East, Afghanistan; and no more nuclear threats from Iran’s madman. And imagine no more worrying about Russia and China and North Korea or Venezuela or another Great Depression.
As we enter this solemn time of remembering 9/11, may our hearts be humbled as we enter a more solemn time to our God—the High Holy Days beginning with Rosh Hashanah, proceeding on to Yom Kippur and then Sukkoth or the Feast of Tabernacles. As we pray for one another, let us not forget to pray for our Jewish brethren, for Israel and the “Peace of Jerusalem.”

Pero ¿Cuál es la relevancia entre 9-11 y las fiestas Bíblicas Judías de los Altos Días Santos que ya están sobre nosotros?
En el día 9-11, América fue atacada por terroristas Árabes Islámicos. Esto fue durante la víspera de los Altos Días Santos Bíblicos. Veintiocho años antes del 9-11, en 1973, la mayoría de naciones Árabes en el Medio Este atacaron a Israel durante estos mismos Días Sagrados. Esto aconteció durante el día más santo de todo el año—en Yom Kippur (conocido como la Guerra de Yom Kippur en el Día de Expiación).
Aquí estamos hoy otra vez siendo asechados en este décimo aniversario del 9-11. ¿Cuándo parara todo esto? Todo esto para con el Mesías y Sus tropas. Lo Judios dicen que el Mesías es Mesías Ben David y los Cristianos dicen que es el Hijo de David, Yeshua o Jesús.
Por el otro lado, musulmanes están esperando su propio mesías llamado en árabe, Mahdi. Yo creo este Mahdi esta tarde según predicciones Musulmanes. Así es que están tratando de forzar sobre el mundo una Intifada que forzara a su mesías a que venga antes del Mesías verdadero.
Durante un tiempo de terror alrededor del mundo con temores de una caída total económica en América, el Mesías viene pronto. Sea usted Judío o Cristiano, hay esperanza.
Imagine por un momento un Mesías-Rey sin necesidad de presidentes, primeros ministros, y emperadores. Imagine un gobierno sin políticos, demócratas, republicanos, libertinos, socialistas, comunistas y anarquistas. Imagine no más guerras en el Medio Este, Afganistán y no más asechanzas nucleares del tonto de Irán. E imagínese no más mortificación tocante a Rusia y China ni el Norte de Corea o Venezuela u otra Gran Depresión.
En tanto entramos en este tiempo solemne de recordar el 9-11, que nuestros corazones estén humillados en tanto entramos en un tiempo más solemne de los Altos Días Santos que incluyen Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur y Sukkoth (Fiesta de Tabernáculos). En tanto oramos unos por los otros, no olvidemos de orar por nuestros hermanos Judios, por Israel y por la “La Paz de Jerusalén.”

ARAB WORLD CRISES
--My Personal View—
I’m often asked two questions these days. One, “What’s your opinion about the whole Middle East Moslem uprisings?” Secondly, “Do you believe your people, the Sephardim Anusim are whom the Prophet Obadiah’s referring to in verse 20?” My concern is–is there any connection between the two? My response is, YES THERE IS. Let’s begin with the Middle East.
What’s taking place in the Middle East and other Moslem Mediterranean nations is obvious. Almost every single Moslem country down there is aflame with civil unrest and the expulsion of their long standing rulers. “But why now?” you ask. I believe God has shown me the reason so let me briskly explain.
The Moslem Arab population of the world, in particular the Middle East, has determined that their leaders (presidents, prime ministers, kings, rulers) show no sign of being their long awaited messiah, the 12th Imam. If their leader was to emerge as their hidden messiah they would’ve seen signs of it a long time ago but nothing has happened. In fact, the only thing that’s taken place is worse conditions with no promise of taking over the world as the Moslem faith believes.
They also see that the Palestinian Moslems living in Gaza and the West Bank aren’t making headway in taking over Israel either. Plus they’ve discovered that President Barak Hussein Obama shows no promise of being even close to being neither their messiah nor his forerunner. So what then?
The inevitable and ultimate step is to FORCE turmoil in their countries in the hope of their messiah stepping in to liberate them and begin the globe’s takeover. They know that their messiah won’t show up until great turmoil and distress has taken root in their communities. They also know that both, Jews and Christians have their version of Messiah so they’d like to precipitate the 12th Imam/messiah to pop out of wherever he’s at right now.
Now…what does all this have to do with my people, the Sephardim Anusim? Let me first say that the Prophet Obadiah said, “…the exiles of Jerusalem that are in Sepharad (Spain) will occupy/possess the Negev,” (1:20b).
It’s obvious that the Sephardim that have lived on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean and have immigrated to Israel have not chosen to dwell in the Negev. They’ve had over 60 years to do so; but they’ve chosen other locations of Israel and show no desire of occupying the Negev. So who does this leave to occupy/possess the Negev and be part of the “Voice of one calling in the desert” to prepare the way for the true Messiah? The Sephardim of the West, of course. The Western Sephardim are known as Anusim because their forefathers were tortured and coerced to convert to Catholicism during the infamous days of the Spanish, the Portuguese and the Mexican Inquisitions.
It isn’t the Eastern Sephardim that yearn to possess the Negev–it’s the Western Sephardim, the Anusim that long to see their Negev blossom as the Prophet Isaiah states in the 35th chapter of his book. In fact, the majority of these Anusim have always lived in geographic regions that look and feel very much like “their Negev.”
So what’s the connection between the Moslem Arab uprising and the returning of the Sephardim Anusim to their Negev? The last verse of the Prophet Obadiah says it all. Obadiah says that after these (Western) Sephardic Jews immigrate and settle in the Negev, God is going to raise up a very special army. He says, “Then saviors (with a lower case ‘s’) will ascend Mt. Zion, judge the mountains of Edom and (then) the kingdom shall be the Lord’s (Messiah).”
All hell is scared to death of this prophecy, and radical Moslems are too. Some Jewish scholars do not say, “Judge Edom” but “wreak havoc” on Edom. It is my firm conviction that yesterday’s Edom is today’s Moslem world that tries to force their own Sharia Laws everywhere they go.
As in the case with Japan’s recent earthquake, fires and tsunami which are wreaking havoc in their nuclear facilities—no one would’ve ever imagined that a nuclear holocaust could come any way other than by someone pushing the button or pulling the trigger! But now we see that nature itself has ways of throwing off man’s most ingenious plans as in this case.
Likewise, no one would’ve ever imagined that God would allow the destruction of Moslem Arabs by other Moslem Arabs in the manner in which we are seeing today. I would’ve never thought that the Middle East would go blow up in flames, as it has been, by those that yearn to take over Erez Israel and her Negev too!
Finally, we must pray feverishly that God build a shield of protection around all of Israel against these wild fires…that God raise up a true and spiritual voice among the Jewish people…that God open the flood gates for my people to return to the homeland of their forefathers…and that Messiah enter the scene post haste. – Amen!

But now we see that nature itself has ways of throwing off man’s most ingenious plans as in this case.
Likewise, no one would’ve ever imagined that God would allow the destruction of Moslem Arabs by other Moslem Arabs in the manner in which we are seeing today. I would’ve never thought that the Middle East would go blow up in flames, as it has been, by those that yearn to take over Erez Israel and her Negev too!
Finally, we must pray feverishly that God build a shield of protection around all of Israel against these wild fires…that God raise up a true and spiritual voice among the Jewish people…that God open the flood gates for my people to return to the homeland of their forefathers…and that Messiah enter the scene post haste. – Amen!

Edom’s Doom! -- --Israel’s Enemies Destroying Themselves—
“This is what the Sovereign LORD says about Edom-We have heard a message from the LORD: An envoy was sent to the nations to say, ‘Rise, and let us go against her for battle.’” Obadiah 1:1
Today, Israel is surrounded by fires of revolt and civil war in neighboring Arab countries. These conflicts are creating huge updraft flames with the potential of leaping across Israeli borders soon.
For more than a generation, Israel has known what it can expect from its unfriendly neighbors. Today, it’s almost impossible to predict how this could affect Israel amidst enormous vacuums of major transitions.
One factor that complicates this matter is that Israelis and Jews around the world fervently anticipate the coming of Messiah. Conversely, the Moslem world is appealing to Allah that he sends their messiah known as the 12th Imam.
Most Moslems believe their messiah will be a descendant of Muhammad and the son of Fatima with a broad forehead and pointed nose. They say he will return just before the end of the world and his appearance will be preceded by a number of prophetic events during 3 years of horrendous world chaos, tyranny and oppression. (Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?) They also believe that he will rule for 7 years. They say he will lead prayer in Mekkah and that Jesus will be at his side and follow him in this process.
For the last five years, I’ve been predicting the fall of radical Islam. I have taught many sessions over television and in public seminars on this topic. My view is that today’s radical Islam is directly linked to ancient Edom—one of Israel’s worst all-time enemies in bible times.
The destruction of Edom is foretold by half a dozen prophets. The prophet Obadiah provides the clearest picture of how God intends to deal with Edom which is today’s Islam. He even includes a vital assertion regarding Sephardim’s role in the context of Edom’s destruction.
Before I point to Sephardim’s role in Edom’s Armageddon, let me highlight why God is so angry with today’s Edomites and what He intends to do about it according to the Prophet Obadiah.
Obadiah highlights the reasons why God’s anger has peaked against Edom (radical Islam) today. A few reasons why Obadiah declared God’s anger was because of:
Their deceptive pride (verse 3) … violence against brother (v. 10) … they stood aloof during their exile (v. 11) … looked down on brother (v. 12a) … rejoiced in Judah’s calamity (v. 12b) … boasted in their trouble ( v. 12c) … invaded them in their disaster (v. 13) … ambushed their fugitives (v. 14a) and handed over the escapees (v. 14b)…
Since 9-11, these modern-day Edomites have caused approximately 10,000 terrorist attacks. The result has been approximately 60,000 dead and 90,000 injured.
The very words of demonized Moslem leaders such as Iran’s Ahmadinejad add fuel to the fires these Moslem countries. For instance, on February 2, 2008, Ahmadinejad said that Israel is a “dirty microbe” and a “savage animal” and that they must be uprooted.
Israel’s Back Yard Terrorist Leader, Ahmed Yassin said: “Israel must disappear from the map.”
What’s worst is how an American woman, Helen Thomas, made a bigoted statement that got her fired as a writer for the Hearst Newspapers. On May 27, 2010, she declared that all Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine (Israel)” and go home to “Germany, Poland and America.”
It’s important to know that the Moslem Koran’s manual called the Hadith demands its followers to feverishly adhere to doctrines of hate and violence. For example, these Manual states: “Jihad is your duty under any ruler, be he godly or wicked. It also dictates that, “Paradise is in the shadow of swords.”
This is why Obadiah records a few of the ways in which God is going to judge and punish today’s Edomites. Below, I document the very punishments which Obadiah declares God is going to perform against Edom. He is going to:
1. Avenge His children
2. Confuse and chase Esau
3. Destroy, desolate, demolish, drunken and drag Esau
4. Horrify Esau
5. Indict Esau
6. Judge Esau
7. Punish Esau
8. Retard Esau with lack of reason/wisdom
9. Slaughter and shame Esau
10. Terrify Esau
11. And waste Esau’s brood once and for all.
Obadiah also says what God intends to do to Israel’s enemies. I have selected but a handful of a dozen or more declarations of what God intend to do to Israel’s and they include the following.
God is going to avenge His children. Obadiah says that God is going to confuse, chase, destroy, demolish, desolate, drunken, drag, punish and even retard them. In the 18th verse of this one-chapter book, Obadiah says, “There will be no survivors.”
Two things are at the brink of taking place which includes the Sephardim.
At the exact moment when they’re needed and probably most “wanted,” they will make their entrance—not a minute early or a minute late! You can find this in the second part of the 20th verse. One bible version says they’ll “occupy” and another version says they’ll “possess” the Negev. I contend you can occupy without taking possession and you can possess without occupying; but, I insist it’ll include both.
Secondly, not until these lost and forgotten Sephardic Anusim Jews have made their entrance, there will be an earth shattering spectacle. This spectacle is what Obadiah 21 states: “Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the LORD's.” (NKJV)
I love the first word of this verse, “THEN.” In other words, as soon as everyone’s in place, including the Sephardic Anusim of the Americas, THEN and only then do we see the grand finale. We’ll see “saviors” come (up) to Mount Zion. These “saviors” are also referred to as “rescuers” and “liberators” in other bible versions. This army of champions will take over Jerusalem and her Zion and then “judge the mountains of Esau.”

My ID Massacre! -- I’m a Marked Man!
I’ve been upset, sad and angry, hurt and disappointed…the whole “enchilada.” But I can now say that I can laugh in the face of my oppositions and disappointments.
The first time I realized I was a marked man was when a high ranking Israeli leader showed me a file they had on me. I was shocked! I was speechless and stupefied. I asked myself, “How in the world would such records get all the way to this high office in Jerusalem?”
Sure enough, this was only the beginning of a terrible series of reports on me and my activities. (Not to worry because I’m not setting the stage for a horrible confession of any sort!) I must say that almost all those reports were false or contained outdated and erroneous information.
Another Israeli leader threw some acronyms of organizations I didn’t even recognize. What’s worse, they associated me with Christian councils and organizations I’ve long resigned from or never even belonged to. If they would’ve only asked—I would’ve told them but they chose to “Google” me through the internet. All they used was false and erroneous information.
I’ve been accused of being a missionary, a Messianic, a Baptist pastor, a Jewish imposter, a Jews for Jesus fanatic and on and on. The truth is that I’ve been none of these!
A vicious group of individuals that I’ll refer to as “wanna-be Jews” published a report on me saying that “The jury is out, now we know that Dell Sanchez is a Baptist pastor…” Frankly, I’ve never even been a Baptist nor a Baptist pastor. What often hurts the most is that the handful of these individuals happens to be from among my own people that have become embittered enemies of our cause.
It’s strange that these few “wanna-be Jews” do the very things that Torah talks against such as presenting false reports and even alienating sincere learners. And a few Christians do about the same thing forgetting that the New Testament has some luscious words against the evil use of the tongue. I must admit that the only Jews I hang out with are “real Jews” that love God and respect me; this includes a few are wonderful rabbis!
As I said before, I can now laugh in the face of all these cartoons—but I still prefer Laurel and Hardy; but, hey, I’m learning to love even those that see themselves as my enemy. They don’t know they’re doing me a favor of keeping the sword of my life razor sharp. I’ll have you know that I’m having the greatest time of my life! I’ll have you know that I’ve never been closer and more intimate with God than today. And I’ve never had such great friends and trustworthy people as now, although few.
I leave you first with the words of Solomon and also David.
Solomon wrote: “A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.” (Proverbs 12:23)
David wrote: “O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, 2 for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. 3 With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause. 4 In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. 5 They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.” (Psalm 109:1-5)

Prophecy for 2011
Not Effort but Sacrifice!

First, I need to emphasize that you do not need to be a prophet to have foresight and to share your personal prognostications of what you perceive could take place in the future. This statement is more than a shot in the dark--it is something that's deep in my (spiritual) gut. So please cut me a little slack as you read it. If you don't agree, that's fine with me. Either way, I'd like your comments on it.
The year 2010 included two exoduses. As we exited 2010, the weekly Torah portion led us into the Book of Exodus (i.e., exiting). I’m just now remembering that God whispered into my heart that He is ushering us into a desert-exodus experience this year.
I believe God is leading America into a desert of sorts. We’re not to worry because God’s intent is for our good and not for our harm. I do not think this desert wilderness will last 40 years but I do know it is intended to TEST us. Needless to say, we’re at the brink of tests that come in the form of mighty shakings.
Exodus 16:4-5 says, “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.’” Please note, God is saying that He wants ‘to see whether we will follow His instruction’ and directives. In other words, the good news is that He wills to instruct and direct us if we let Him. We have nothing to loose if we do and all to loose if we don’t.
Exodus 20:20 says that Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.” His tests are intended to keep us from sinning any more. In other words, God’s intent is to STOP US from sinning—because we have sinned pretty miserably.
God’s test includes no less than two things.
First, God is taking our “toys” away from us. Secondly, God is requiring more than our good efforts—He is demanding sacrifice. Let me explain.
God is stripping us, including our government from the toys that have consumed much of our attention, money and time. God is stripping us of our pet projects which kept us too busy from truly listening and depending on Him. We’ve become addicted to the little toys that keep us so busy on an individual and a national basis. We see this in the news every single day—how God is stripping our government from material things we took for granted which led to mismanagement of God’s resources. This is sending shock waves all across our nation and also affecting all nations of the world. And He isn’t through with us yet.
Secondly, God is requiring real sacrifices from each and every American citizen. Situations that we could previously accomplish with some good effort will no longer work this year. God has led us to the point where we must go way above and beyond the very best efforts we could ever engage in. God is expecting us to make real sacrifices in order to attain His best for us and for our nation.
Psalms 51:16-17 reads: “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
In other words, God will no longer endure what we called our personal sacrifices which became nothing more than route and routine. He is requiring the sacrifices of a “broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart…”
This sounds much like that which God spoke to King Solomon in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
Now this is what I call sacrifice in this day and age in our nation–willingness to humble ourselves, a real commitment to pray and truly seek God’s face and to turn from our “wicked ways.” But this shouldn’t be a sacrifice if we hadn’t become such a proud and arrogant people.
The epitome of the sacrifice God’s calling for is captured in Psalm 50:5 which says, “Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice."
God doesn’t want another temporary or provisional commitment. He wants a permanent and irreversible covenant with Him which can take place only by our daily and personal sacrifice. This is the only way that, individually, we’ll press beyond the insurmountable obstacles that lay before us. And this is also the only way that our nation might possibly remain as the number-one nation in the world. Failure to do this only spells our nation’s bankruptcy.
And if our nation goes down, most Americans will go down too. Conversely, if most Americans go down, we’ll pull our entire nation along with us too.
So it is that we do not need a new set of toys and addicting pet projects to keep us busy or entertained. We need 2 Chronicles 7:14 to become our daily prayer and action. We need to contract every muscle within our being to sacrifice itself so that we might finally achieve God’s purpose and destiny for us and for our nation.
In conclusion, the title for the first Torah reading for the New Year reads: “And I appeared.” I earnestly believe that if we follow the 2 Chronicles 7:14 formula set by The Almighty, He shall appear to our nation once again. I believe God will “hear from heaven and will forgive (our) sin and will heal (our) land”—and this begins with you and me today.

And this is also the only way that our nation might possibly remain as the number-one nation in the world. Failure to do this only spells our nation’s bankruptcy.
And if our nation goes down, most Americans will go down too. Conversely, if most Americans go down, we’ll pull our entire nation along with us too.
So it is that we do not need a new set of toys and addicting pet projects to keep us busy or entertained. We need 2 Chronicles 7:14 to become our daily prayer and action. We need to contract every muscle within our being to sacrifice itself so that we might finally achieve God’s purpose and destiny for us and for our nation.
In conclusion, the title for the first Torah reading for the New Year reads: “And I appeared.” I earnestly believe that if we follow the 2 Chronicles 7:14 formula set by The Almighty, He shall appear to our nation once again. I believe God will “hear from heaven and will forgive (our) sin and will heal (our) land”—and this begins with you and me today.
